Superb study of referendums as tools of democracy

In this excellent book, Matt Qvortrup, the Chair of Politics at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, studies the theory and practice of referendums.

Chapter One shows how referendums can be democratic. Chapter Two examines the Victorian constitutional lawyer A. V. Dicey's theory of the referendum as a people's safeguard against encroachments by their elected representatives. Chapter Three looks at the theory that the electorate is always reactionary. Chapter Four asks whether referendums on constitutional issues should be obligatory. Chapter Five looks at different models of referendums, either called by a minority in parliament or by a specified number of electors. Chapter Six proposes reforms.

This second edition has new appendices on campaign spending and administration. Unlimited corporate spending can distort referendum results, just as it can distort election results. The argument therefore is not against referendums, but against unlimited corporate spending.

Direct democracy, including referendums, complements representative democracy, contrary to the dogma of parliamentary sovereignty. John Locke argued that parliament was not sovereign because its power was only lent by the people, who are the ultimate sovereign power.

Qvortrup shows that 49% of postwar referendums in Western Europe have overruled the government's position, which proves that referendums are not the tools of governments. 51% have backed the government's position, which proves that people do not just oppose the government whatever the merits of the issue.

After the Danish referendum on the EU's Maastricht Treaty, a survey found that voters' knowledge surpassed that of non-specialist MPs: 90% had a reasonable knowledge of the issue. This contradicts the elitist prejudices of all too many MPs, who never doubt their own ability to decide what is best for the country.

As political scientist Vernon Bogdanor noted, "the arguments against the referendums are also arguments against democracy." So, to refuse a referendum on the issue of increasing EU integration, on which all the parliamentary parties promised a referendum, is to oppose democracy.

While scholarship on direct democracy in the United States and Switzerland is growing, a worldwide survey is lacking and this book (especially the updated versions) provide a very good but mostly unbiased viewpoint that is mostly accessible academic language.

Especially useful are specific points relating to political science as well as detailed statistics showing a deeper study of many sides of how referendums have been utilized which make this book of great use for activists, researchers, professors, politicians, and of course citizens.

An excellent Quality Control resource

From the first few pages, you can tell the authors know the in's and out's of Quality Control. In "Part 1: Understanding the Basics of Quality Control", they lay out a simple, easy to understand explanation of Quality Control and how you can apply it to whatever business you are involved in. In "Part 2: Putting Fundamental Quality Control Methods to Use", they present a plan to get you started "Down the Road to Quality". They address one of the hardest things to accomplish regarding Quality Control, the collection of metrics to measure, report, and evaluate your progress. The remaining chapters are equally informative and each goes into precise detail on applying the fundamentals of Six Sigma to your Quality Control program.

With helpful tips and expert advise loaded in every chapter, this book is an excellent Quality Control resource and I recommend it highly.

Cannot Be Ignored - A Must Read

(This is a review of "You will have to Learn to Love Me More" by David Keyston. I don't know why the picture has been replaced with another book, although I am sure it is a very good book if it is by Myrtle Smyth.)

First of all, no matter what anyone has said about the controversy over Bliss Knapp's "Destiny of the Mother Church," (including myself), this is essential reading for Christian Scientists. Mr. Keyston has compiled so many quotes from early workers in Christian Science that I had heard or read many years ago, that this cannot be ignored if only for that reason. I particularly remember a conversation my grandparents had about a controversy regarding something Judge Hanna said. The bottom line there was, "But the Mother Church says."

I had read an earlier version of this thesis on the internet, and I must say that this copy I have now, makes the author's position much more clear, and less likely to be misunderstood; and even if I do still have a problem with a couple of minor points of interpretation, I am convinced of his honesty and thoroughness.

This is in stark contrast to the changes in editions of some other Christian Science materials, over the years, where things have been changed, resulting in completely different impressions or ideas. The difference is reminiscent of what is happening with the modern Bible translations.

I have in recent years seen church members who have never even heard certain things. Whether or not there has been a deliberate attempt on the part of some in earlier times to bury information is one of the things being debated. When things get changed, even if there were or were not good intentions,or someone was duped -- or whatever -- and even if there is an attempt by someone later to set things right, they can't do it without admitting what was done, and then people will say, "Why should we believe this now?" So I am grateful to be able to remember certain things that I have read, seen, and heard over the years.

The proof, however, is in the pudding as they say. One of the very few things I had NOT heard before, was that the healing work in Chicago had at one point stopped, and Mrs. Eddy had told them that it was because they were not loving her enough; and that when the situation was corrected, the work resumed. I believe it.

Very insightful and well researched

This book is fresh and insightful and well researched.
Not many people are familiar with the subject, and it is probably
more appreciated by those who are experienced in Christian Science with
open and sincere hearts. If one already has a fixed
point of view, then don't bother reading this book. But if you are truly interested
in "truth for truth's sake", you will appreciate this. It takes inspiration to
recognize inspiration.

"Desert Island" London

I'm a big fan of London, and have (so far) read probably 2/3 of his published work. I always prefer, when possible, to read his stories in their original collected volumes, rather than in the many "greatest hits" collections of his work. This volume is the exception to that rule. Earle Labor, a renowned London scholar, has put together the ultimate "desert island" volume of London's work. All of the best stories are here, as well as an excellent collection of his non-fiction writing, letters, and biographical material. The Call of the Wild is also included in its entirety. Unfortunately, other excellent novels are not represented here, but that's understandable due to space concerns. Labor provides a detailed chronology of London's life, and an introductory essay that puts these varied works into context. The result is not merely a showcase of London's best work, but a volume that gives an excellent overview of the man's life, the stages in his literary career, and the development of his politics and philosophy. For diehard London fans, if you can only fit one book in your carry-on bag, this is a great volume to have with you. For those who have never read London before, this book makes a great introduction to the man and his art.

A new dimension to London

I first read this collection about two years ago and still go back to selected works from time to time. If all you have read by London is "The Call of The Wild", then you have not been exposed to the depth of his writing.
Stories like "A piece of steak" and the more popular "To build a fire" show London's ability to highlight the human spirit. "Strength of the strong" has deep political connotations and probably inspired "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, a contemporary of London.
There are really so many great stories in this collection. I advise anyone to explore the work of Jack London further.

American Experiences

This is an exceptional collection of short stories, non-fiction and letters. Though London is best known for his arctic adventure stories (many of his best are found in this book), the breadth of topics about which he wrote is extensive and that is demonstrated here. The things that ties all the writing together, however, are excellent writing, passion, ferocity, intelligence and a social conscience. London had many interests and was a prolific writer and this book captures his talents better than any I've seen. I would highly recommend the collection to any one who likes London, short stories, good writing or American history (since his stories capture many aspects of America in the early 20th century). This is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it.
