The fraying fringes of 1950s literary London

Rich and slim, the celebrated author Nancy Hawkins takes us in hand and leads us back to her threadbare years in postwar London, where she spends her days working for a mad, near-bankrupt publisher (“of very good books”) and her nights dispensing advice at her small South Kensington rooming house. Everywhere Mrs. Hawkins finds evil: with aplomb, however, she confidently sets about putting things to order, to terrible effect.

From Publishers Weekly
Even the title is witty in this latest of Spark's delightful novels, bearing as it does at least three layers of ambiguity. It is a tale told in a splendidly commonsensical way by Mrs. Hawkins, a buxom young war widow who is a tower of strength in a failing London publishing house during the lean years after WW II. She is surrounded, both at work and in her seedy Kensington boarding house, by those slightly off-center eccentrics the Englishand particularly Sparkdraw to perfection; everything on the surface seems utterly realistic, yet fantasy as rich as anything in Garcia Marquez is only a breath away. Mrs. Hawkins selects a hate object among the literary hangers-on at her firm, and that hatred changes her life. She also becomes involved with a Polish dressmaker with a dark secret, invents a supremely successful method of dieting and almost in spite of herself becomes happy. Spark knows the wonderfully zany world of postwar-London publishing backward, her wit has never been more telling, and any book person is going to gobble this up. A sample, to whet the appetite: "Publishers, for obvious reasons, attempt to make friends with their authors. Martin York tried to make authors of his friends."

From Library Journal
This 1988 novel is told from the perspective of Mrs. Hawkins, who, now living a leisurely existence in Italy, looks back on her days as a young widow employed by an oddball publisher. Typical Spark, the plot soon becomes laced with mystery involving blackmail, suicide, and other dastardly doings. Great fun.

Review
“A 1950s Kensington of shabby-genteel bedsitters, espresso bars...irradiated with the sudden glows of lyricism she can so beautifully effect.” (Sunday Times [London])

“The divine Spark is shining at her brightest--pure delight.” (Independent)

“The plot arrow is large and sharp and accurate. There's crazies, death, fist-fighting, insults, medical emergencies, injustice ... hoodoo and more.” (Stephen Hanulec - Glyph Jockey)

Delightful
By C. Ebeling
In a novel narrated by a character who believes it her life mission to dispense advice, author Muriel Spark has her counsel a would-be writer to imagine confiding in a letter to a personal friend and to write the story that way. Spark has followed her own advice and it works delightfully. The best part of her approach is that she puts out some dramatic irony so that the reader is not just a passive listener accepting of everything the narrator asserts but is aware that not quite all of her advice, nor her assessment of herself, is always on target. There is a sly wit and spot-on social observations in full bloom here.
This is the story of a woman told looking back to 30 years before, to 1954, to a rooming house in Kensington, London, a far cry from her present circumstances. In 1954, she is "Mrs. Hawkins," no first name, with the heft of a zaftig figure and the tragedy of being a war widow. Everyone knows who she is though she does not always know them in return; she is expected, she believes, to hand out advice, to take care of others, and commensurate with this station in life, she is a mid-level editor in publishing. She has lots of plates twirling on sticks: her world at the rooming house, her job, herself. Then along comes Hector Bartlett who embodies what she hates the most: an ambitious but grossly untalented writer, a sycophant. The upright Mrs. Hawkins, loyal to the truth as she sees it, nails him with a particularly appropriate French vulgarism that becomes a refrain for her has he periodically intrudes on her life, a vulgarism that keeps costing her jobs. Because of Hector, her story becomes a series of reversals, from the tragic to the comic.
There are many characters, many amusing episodes, many trenchant observations going on in this book. I've been debating about how many stars to award only because Spark has outdone this book with others, including the recent REALITY AND DREAMS and the not-so-recent THE GIRLS OF SLENDER MEANS. What the heck, I'll give it 5. I wasn't disappointed in the least.

No half portions here - read in full
By Amanda Richards
This is one of those books that cannot described in a nutshell. If you had to hazard a guess at a description, you'd have to place it firmly in the comedy/ tragedy/ drama/ mystery/ romance section, or simply file it under Spark: Muriel in the Classics section.

Narrated by the once round and central character, Agnes Hawkins (a.k.a. Mrs. Hawkins or Nancy), the story revolves around her experiences as a young widow living in furnished rooms in a semi-detached building in South Kensington. She colorfully describes her neighbors and acquaintances, and gives us tantalizing glimpses into their little secret worlds, in which she is a trustee and confidante.

Despite the mysterious black boxes and the lurking threat of enemies, known and unknown, our heroine manages to keep her head above water, remains a pillar of strength and finds true love among the rubble. Thanks to her diet plan (freely given to the reader as a bonus for purchasing the book), she gains new self-respect, and reinvents herself in a new country, a far cry from her humble beginnings.

A simple classic by an inspired writer.

By Yuki G. Hotta
Pros:
It does go through lots of useful examples. As a person persuing the career of becoming an actuary I know that it is worth buying it.

Cons:
The mathematical formulae is a bit skewed in a way that it does not use a nice notation, so as a current mathematics instructor this is not definitely a good book for math people.

As a person who is trying to learn Excel, this is also a bit too difficult to learn from. Although it comes with a CD showing you lots of examples, if you cannot build it yourself you cannot really learn it. I am not proficient in excel, so I find it not useful for beginners.

Summary:
Overall it seems like a good book for people who are already in the field of analysis, but it is not for people who are fresh to learn this subject.

From one of the world's greatest economic minds, author of the New York Times bestseller The End of Poverty, a clear and vivid map of the road to sustainable and equitable global prosperity and an augury of the global economic collapse that lies ahead if we don't follow it.

From Publishers Weekly
In this sobering but optimistic manifesto, development economist Sachs (The End of Poverty) argues that the crises facing humanity are daunting—but solutions to them are readily at hand. Sachs focuses on four challenges for the coming decades: heading off global warming and environmental destruction; stabilizing the world's population; ending extreme poverty; and breaking the political logjams that hinder global cooperation on these issues. The author analyses economic data, demographic trends and climate science to create a lucid, accessible and suitably grim exposition of looming problems, but his forte is elaborating concrete, pragmatic, low-cost remedies complete with benchmarks and budgets. Sachs's entire agenda would cost less than 3% of the world's annual income, and he notes that a mere two days' worth of Pentagon spending would fund a comprehensive antimalaria program for Africa, saving countless lives. Forthright government action is the key to avoiding catastrophe, the author contends, not the unilateral, militarized approach to international problems that he claims is pursued by the Bush administration. Combining trenchant analysis with a resounding call to arms, Sachs's book is an important contribution to the debate over the world's future. (Mar.)

Review
"Common Wealth explains the most basic economic reckoning that the world faces. We can address poverty, climate change, and environmental destruction at a very modest cost today with huge benefits for shared and sustainable prosperity and peace in the future, or we can duck the issues today and risk a potentially costly reckoning in later years. Despite the rearguard opposition of some vested interests, policies to help the world's poor and the global environment are in fact the very best economic bargains on the planet."
-Al Gore, Winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and Former Vice President of the United States

"Jeffrey Sachs never disappoints. With powerful illustrations and moving words, he describes what humanity must do if we are to share a common future on this planet. By making sense of economics as it affects the lives of people, this book is an excellent resource for all those who want to understand what changes the 21st century may bring."

Good grasp on the issues, not necessarily the solutions
By Pastan
Jeffrey Sachs Critique
To start off this paper I would like to say a couple things about myself with regards to Jeffrey Sachs's book Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet. I think that the environment is a major problem in today's world, furthermore I believe that global poverty and overpopulation are also issues, the difficulty I have with Jeffrey Sachs's book, aside from his solutions, is the degree of severity of these issues. Sachs argues that the biggest issues facing the world during the 21st century are environmental degradation, overpopulation and extreme poverty, which is coupled and compounded by an ineffectual international system. Rather I believe that the major issues facing us today instead stem from the developed nations and the economy.

Jeffrey Sachs first identifies greenhouse gasses as a major concern, and how the world is approaching thresholds that will be increasingly difficult to come back from. He also ties these exponential rises in CO2 to the increasingly severe weather seen around the world, in heat waves, droughts and hurricanes. To combat this rise in greenhouse gasses Sachs goes with the standard, "stop deforestation", "cleaner electricity", and "reduce car emissions", but the way he suggests to do some of these things is somewhat odd. On deforestation he proposes to pay land owners in critical areas of the developing world, such as the Amazon to not cut down their trees. With regards to electricity and automobile emissions, Sachs advocates for a very centralized approach where we use clean electricity to power most if not all facets of our lives. Both of these cases looks fabulous on paper, but the real world is a far stretch from the hypotheticals of the pen. Paying foreign land owners to not deforest their own land is a tough sell not only to the taxpayers but also to the foreign government where said land resides. One has to have heavy international cooperation, which is difficult to come by and even more difficult to maintain, for a long term solution. There is a similar problem with cleaner electricity using plug in cars and electric heating in that on top of moving nearly all of our power to clean sources; it would require a major overhaul of the electrical grid, just to allow for the very high required output.
At the same time, even if the above problems are dealt with, there is the fact that any effort to minimize climate change does not work unless all nations, both developing and developed, work together cohesively towards mitigation. In a global economy companies can simply move to foreign nations that do not have as harsh environmental controls, resulting in no overall mitigation and a transfer of jobs out of the countries that attempt to mitigate climate change. The Kyoto protocols, which Jeffrey Sachs quotes often, ignore this fact, based upon the correct idea that developing nations, such as China, cannot handle and would be completely unwilling to take on the extra burdens of carbon emission controls. This is best exampled when Canada left the Kyoto protocols in Dec. of 2011 citing the fact that "we do not agree with a protocol that only controls a little bit of global emissions, not enough to actually make any difference but enough to transfer Canadian jobs overseas."
Truthfully I do not believe that the mitigation of climate change will ever find significant progress through the Kyoto protocol or anything like it. What Jeffrey Sachs either doesn't realize, or more likely, conveniently forgets (though he does make a haphazard attempt touch on it later) is that western governments' objective, for better or worse, is first and foremost about getting reelected. This political reality unfortunately does not translate well into long term solutions for a nation, and instead emphasizes short term gains. At the same time one must remember that climate change cannot be quantified. It is an unknown variable, even when taking climate change to be 100% manmade there is no absolute, no undeniable statement of "if such and such does not occur then this will happen." At best we are given general statements that there would be changes, most of which would be bad. Politicians do not work well with uncertainty like this, especially in areas where they must rely on others for knowledge. The current political system can easily understand the uncertainties due to extremists, dictators, and the masses, because to be elected politicians must understand humans; however the cold and unfeeling power of nature and climate change is so far outside of current politicians' experience that they are ill-equipped to put climate change forth as a true national agenda. This is a situation unique to environmental issues, unlike other esoteric and difficult to understand fields, such as finance, military, and industry, where individuals regularly transfer into the political system, environmentalists have no direct route from tree-hugging to being politicians.
In the end the current environmental movement, like all things in a democratic state is driven by the electorate who, unfortunately, are more distractible than toddlers, and are reliant on the candidates to bring up the issues that of the greatest concern. Politicians won't set a complex issue such as climate change as a central issue to their campaign, not only because they are not qualified to talk on the matter but also because it is difficult to propose. Perhaps in 20 years climate change will flood half of Florida but because of the fact that this dire consequence is an uncertain estimate of the distant future (at least in political terms) the electorate does not care. Especially when compared with the ability to get a job and feed your family for the next year, in tough economic times or, when economic times are good, lower taxes and a purchase of a new TV.

Another major point of Sachs is that global population growth needs to stabilize to maintain the availability of scarce resources, to ensure continued economic development, and to maintain "global political stability" (pg. 185) where Sachs points to developing Africa as the major issue. Sachs argues that a reduction in fertility rates will lead to less regional instability due to resource scarcity, and the fact that the population will be on average older, they will also be not as easily swayed and made to dance to the tunes of popular figures. Along a similar line of thought Jeffrey Sachs puts forward that the reduction and elimination of poverty traps should be a major goal of any forward looking developed nation. He then Logically goes on to explain that this would curb terrorist extremist groups' ability to recruit leading to enhanced security at home, as well as increased prosperity and greater wealth for all in the long run.
Compared to his solutions for climate change Sachs's answers to stabilize the world population are much more filled out. His states family planning, contraceptives and even abortion, as needed options to combat this growth, going on to make a convincing case that a cut in infant mortality will also decrease the birth rate. This is one of Sachs's strongest points in the book and one that I generally agree on, though one must wonder if he underestimates the strong religious and pro-natal groups that have a presence in Africa. At the same time I find his arguments towards eliminating poverty traps to also be fairly well thought out. The question for me is whether these issues are large enough for governments to interfere and while Jeffrey Sachs would certainly say yes I say no.
The first thing that one has to remember before delving into this argument is "what is the role of government in most developed nations?" I would say to protect the interests of their own people. If people are starving in poverty trap in a foreign country other governments should not feel any obligation to minimize this. Any humanitarian aid to foreign nations needs to be weighed dollar for dollar against what the donating nation gains, whether they gain an increased presence in a particular region or something else. Jeffrey Sachs says that what we gain (safety from terrorism and a more prosperous world) is worth the 280 billion in expenditure (pg. 311). Sachs argues that the cost of this investment could be spread amongst the wealthier nations and that this high annual cost would merely be a temporary kick starter for economic development in subsistence economies making long-term costs null (pg. 12). He then goes on to expound on the benefits of the millennium villages.
At first glance this looks like a no brainer, less poverty equals less anger equals less terrorism equals happier world, and to a degree this is probably the case. What I question is the feasibility of what is essentially a plan to industrialize the world. The first issue I see is the obvious one that any development using public funds will not only require a relatively responsible government and a willing population but also will have to have at least some ability to align culturally with the donor nation(s). Governments are not going to invest billions to minimize poverty in a region without some assurances that the money will be well spent. The second issue I see here is natural resources, and future instabilities. For all the problems with developing nations I fear that industrialization will just trade one problem for another much worse one. No matter how one looks at it terrorism will never be a credible threat to the sovereignty of the United States or other nations. Five thousand people dead in a plane crash in New York compared to forty-five thousand dead annually due to gun crime, the number five thousand is insignificant. A modern resource war, on the other hand, between developed nations in Africa to maintain their economic development, now that is scary.
Lastly I question the intelligence of forcing farmers and agriculture in the developing world to rely on expensive genetically modifies crops and fossil fuel based fertilizers which he advocates with the millennium villages. Even If we assume that they use these technological advancements responsibly and do not over nitrogenize the soil, then farmer will be relying on prohibitively expensive solutions to maintain crop yields. While theoretically genetically modified crops could be priced based on what the consumers can pay, nitrogen fixation, the centerpiece of modern agriculture, is tied to fossil fuels, natural resources that are becoming increasingly rare and thus more expensive, especially in developing nations that do not have a developed energy sector. This would require long term subsidizing of foreign farmers, which is not a reasonable possibility.

This moves into the final blatant leap of logic in Sachs' arguments, which is how this will be accomplished. Sachs argues for the need for "global participation in global problem solving" (pg 295) yet the only way he proposes to accomplish this is through the establishment of "global funds" that would provide a "highly visible [Places] where governments could seek help." (pg. 300) This of course brings about the question of who looks over these solutions, is it the U.N.? He establishes that the UN needs to be revamped and we cannot work under the current scheme, we need "global legislation" (pg. 334). It seems to me that Sachs is hinting at a supranational authority, but not going as far to say it. Governments take years to agree on trade policies, a climate change policy or a policy to minimize global poverty is much more complex, and politically tricky. Any comprehensive oversight is impossible as nations will not give up sovereignty for anything short of a global catastrophe. In the end using either the UN to implement a policy or some supranational authority it does not work and I found Sachs's solution to this dilemma to be absent. While there have been major pieces of international regulation in the past they were to deal with issues that were drastically different than the problems facing us today. Sachs' primary examples, CFCs and sulfur dioxide, are perfect example of the disparity between the issues of the past and today; Acid rain is a local issue with simple consequences that can be fixed easily within a state. CFCs are also drastically different than CO2 in that they were not difficult to switch away from, and more importantly it was easy to see quantifiable problems with their current use by just looking at simple inferred images of the upper atmosphere, there were no maybes. Furthermore, Governments are not going to give into public funds around the globe, where they do not have a say in how that money is being spent. Compounding this problem is the fact that different cultures are naturally going to want these "global funds" spent differently. Sachs says that we must focus on our similarities and we will get through this, this seems overly optimistic.
The point that I disagree with Jeffrey Sachs on the most is that these issues are the greatest of my generation. While I may give him climate change and faulty international institutions as being high on the list, poverty traps and global overpopulation are not. Certainly in some cases I can see the benefits of a relatively small amount of money being invested towards these goals but for all the problems that developing countries have the scope of the problems is very limited. On the other hand the problems facing developed nations have much greater and far reaching affects. An economic collapse within a developing nation causes an isolated slump that can be fixed (relatively) easily; in a developed country an economic collapse can cause a worldwide depression. I am reminded of an airplane and how when the oxygen masks fall from the ceiling you are supposed to help yourself first, then others. While eliminating poverty traps and reducing population growth are admirable and worthy goals, we must prioritize. If we invest in the developing world while avoiding problems at home then could find that both ourselves and the developing countries are without oxygen.
In the end however we must look at this book as a whole in the view of what it is meant to accomplish. Common wealth is not meant for policy makers, or economists, or even those who are simply knowledgeable about the issues facing us today, rather it is a book for the uninformed that gives positive outlook for the world ahead in order to oppose the doom and gloom that we are inundated with daily. Perhaps I am a pessimist, and I am being overly "cynical" and "defeatist" as Jeffrey Sachs would say about topics that are facing today's world. (pg. 6) It is possible, but I think not. Rather I think that there is a line between being optimistic and being silly and that Jeffrey Sachs crossed it.

Great practice
By Richard J. Sarni
I have read many other books by Sachs. He is a common sense economist. I have read many books by noted international economists. I look forward to a continued read by this renown authority. If only more companies, countries and international agencies would put these ideas into practice.

Francis of Assisi and His World (Ivp Histories), by Mark Galli

Francis of Assisi is one of the world's most beloved and popular religious figures--and also one of the most misrepresented. Such is the assertion of Mark Galli, who in this IVP Histories volume strips away the modern gloss in order to discover the real man in his real physical, political, and social context. Writing with lively and engaging style, Galli traces the fascinating adventure of Francis's life, from his hedonistic youth to his emergence as a Christian leader of outstanding influence and passion. The saint revealed here is not the bland, romanticized free spirit of popular misconception, but a complex and contentious man who combined an irradiated mysticism with a very practical Christian commitment and, above all, sought to glorify God as Creator. Francis of Assisi and His World is a "must-read," both for the inspiring story it tells and for the beauty of its art and illustration.

Review
I was thoroughly impressed (not to mention frequently moved) by Galli's handling of Francis' story. Mark Galli manages to tell the story in a way that is fresh, engaging, and thought-provoking. This book (and all the books in this series) is a very attractive little volume with high-gloss pages and full-color artwork placed throughout. In short, if I were to recommend a biography of Francis to anybody wanting to understand this great Saint, this would be it. (Wyman Richardson, Walking Together, January 28, 2008)

"Few overviews of Christian history can rival the IVP Histories' winning mix of summary and storytelling. Aimed at a general audience, these expertly written books contain much to delight and inform even this long-time student of Christian history. Their size makes them easy to begin reading, and their beautiful images and clear, colorful writing make them hard to put down. A treasure!" (Chris Armstrong, managing editor, Christian History and Biography)

Happily surprised and highly recommended...
By Amazon Customer
This text was required for a college class I'm taking but I must say how surprised I am by it. The story is easy to read, the pages are glossy and colorful, and I find myself easily understanding a story I thought I would struggle to comprehend. There are notes and sidebars that enhance the actual story itself and I find those additions beneficial to the overall text and the story as well. This author makes a story from centuries ago easy to understand and relatable and it actually makes me interested in a life story that I didn't think I had any interest in learning about. I also find this to be an easy read and I'd be able to read it even if it wasn't a required class text. I'd recommend it to people in college and those who are not - expand your mind and enjoy the story.

A guide to understanding and responding to business uncertainty in the twenty-first century

Managing uncertainty has become a new business imperative. Technological discontinuities, regulatory upheavals, geopolitical shocks, abrupt shifts in consumer tastes or behavior, and many other factors have emerged or intensified in recent years and together conspire to undermine even the most carefully constructed business strategies. Managing Uncertainty: Strategies for Surviving and Thriving in Turbulent Times addresses these new challenges, assessing the sources of business turbulence, how to classify uncertainty, and the different ways in which uncertainty can be embraced to allow greater innovation and growth.

Drawing on examples from around the world, the book presents the most recent ideas on what it means to manage uncertainty, from practitioners, academics, and consultants.

  • Addresses the challenges of managing uncertainty in business
  • Presents a step-by-step guide to managing business uncertainty
  • Draws examples from major international companies, including Intel, Procter & Gamble, Siemens, Boeing, Philips, Ford, Apple, and many more

Written for business leaders and managers looking for new ways to ensure that their businesses continue to thrive in a world of increasing complexity, Managing Uncertainty presents new and innovative ideas about reducing risk by understanding difficult-to-predict shifts.

From the Inside Flap

The need to manage uncertainty has become increasingly important. The feedback gleaned from senior executives interviewed for the book suggests that, in their eyes, there is no precise definition of uncertainty and therefore no precise solution. Some viewed the task of managing uncertainty as no more than an extension of financial risk management, entailing the need for financial "buffers" brought about by greater liquidity. Others saw the challenge in broader terms, entailing a more flexible approach to strategy formulation and shorter, more regular reviews of progress and change, using non-financial measures as well as more conventional fiduciary ones. There was no consensus on a distinct and coherent set of skills to help support the task. The imperative stressed over and over again related to an organisation's "strategic readiness" for sudden and unexpected threats and opportunities—through a combination of strategic flexibility, strong navigational leadership, resilience, collaborative partnership, predictive learning and agility. This focus is reflected in the book's structure and conclusions.

From the Back Cover

The global financial crisis has ushered in a period of extreme uncertainty leaving major unresolved issues, such as the euro-zone crisis, which may take years to play out fully. Managing this level of uncertainty has introduced a new and complex challenge for managers, for whom there has been no established framework to help them prepare and steer their company through turbulent and unpredictable waters. This book provides such a framework. Through a detailed survey conducted by PA Consulting Group in collaboration with the authors and follow-up interviews by them with senior executives in a range of leading global firms that explored the way organisations reacted to the shock and aftershocks of the financial crisis, the authors have identified six critical characteristics that organisations must display if they are to survive and thrive in these uncertain times. These characteristics are:

  • Strategic anticipation
  • Navigational leadership
  • Agility

Many industries are seeing unprecedented shifts in market share, resulting in a clear separation between winners and losers. The message of this book is that business leaders who act now to develop these six characteristics in their own organisation—facing the possibility of turbulence and planning to emerge stronger from it—will be the winners.

"A book that every CEO should read — and act on. Doing so may make the difference between winning and losing in the coming crisis."
Sir John Banham, former chairman of Johnson Matthey PLC and Whitbread PLC, and former Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry

Covering your organisation through prepared managers
By Himri
After the recent crisis, we have seen how many sectors are interrelated. Crash in one leads to burn in many. In such 'uncertain' times, how can organizations prevail.
Uncertainty management is different from risk and crisis management. How can their managers be prepared for this unknown situation? To answer these, the authors have collaborated with PA consulting group in a survey and followed up the results with interviews of senior executives.
Scenario planning, improving agility and resilience of a company have been shown to be some of the main ways to survive the uncertain times. Communication has always been it for uncertainty reduction theory. Apart from these, analytics and collaboration have been shown with examples from GlaxosmithKline, Bestbuy and others as big players in their success.
Other books reference in the book, specifically the books on Analytics make the reader see how pattern recognition in customer behaviour can be used for double loop learning.
For a better understanding of uncertainty itself, refer to 'Managing project uncertainty' by David Cleden.

solid work
By archer523
I work in healthcare and have done specific work in mentoring and leadership development. The book's brevity was appreciated. The subject matter is perfect for our time. The topics are explained with enough detail for understanding, but be warned some of the topics are not "beginnner" level leadership challenges. Great for those who are past the early phase of learning in management. This topic is completely appropriate for health care leaders at this time. While the survey appeared to be done in the UK, that did not seem to make any of the material less relevant to the U.S.

The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics, by Robert A. J. Gagnon

Gagnon offers the most thorough analysis to date of the biblical texts relating to homosexuality. He demonstrates why attempts to classify the Bible’s rejection of same-sex intercourse as irrelevant for our contemporary context fail to do justice to the biblical texts and to current scientific data. Gagnon’s book powerfully challenges attempts to identify love and inclusivity with affirmation of homosexual practice. “. . . the most sophisticated and convincing examination of the biblical data for our time.”―Jürgen Becker, Professor of New Testament, Christian-Albrechts University

From the Back Cover
"Gagnon offers the most thorough analysis to date of the biblical texts relating to homosexuality. His strong and clearly articulated argument establishes that the Bible contains a unanimous witness defining same-sex intercourse as sin. He does so while rigorously engaging biblical scholars and historians who have written both for and against this understanding of same-sex intercourse. In addition, he demonstrates systematically why attempts to classify as irrelevant for our contemporary context the Bible's rejection of same-sex intercourse fail to do justice to the biblical texts. His conclusions are clear and compassionate, as he cautions readers on all sides of the debate against a truncated gospel, and challenges all to strive for a holistic view of the command to love God and neighbor."

HEAVILY RESEARCHED
By EMAN NEP
With the Homosexual agenda gaining momentum and taking hold around the world it is important for Christians to familiarize themselves with what the Bible says (and doesn't say) about Homosexuality.

In this book, Robert Gagnon takes the Biblical stance that homosexuality is clearly a sin. His book is divided into several parts, going in a logical, chronological order, starting with the Old Testament and ancient Near-Eastern culture, Judaism, the teachings of Jesus, the teachings of Paul and finally, a look at some scientific research in regards to the subject.

At 493 pages this is certainly not light reading--especially considering the copious amounts of footnotes--but it is definitely very heavily researched, citing sources from many ancient cultures, philosophers, historians and religious texts.

Also of note, I noticed that Gagnon is wary of avoiding sweeping generalizations (words like "all", "always", "everyone", etc)--a trait to be desired in objective research that is sometimes lacking. While he largely disagrees with those taking a pro-gay stance, to his credit he makes it known when they have said something that he entirely or at least partially agrees with.

The main question remains: Does Gagnon make a strong case for saying that the Bible is against homosexuality? I would have to say that he does. In addition to his arguments, there are some things I would have pointed out from my studies in the various world religions. For example, Zoroastrianism also speaks against homosexuality as evident in the following passage of the Zend-Avesta.

"Ahura Mazda answered: 'The man that lies with mankind as man lies with womankind, is the man that is a Daeva [demon] . . ." The Zend-Avesta, Fargard VIII, V, 32.

Hinduism affirms that sexual intercourse is to be between a man and a woman in the Upanishads. Bear in mind that India is about 2500 miles away from most of the events in the Bible.

"Prajapati then thought to himself: 'Now, why don't I prepare a base for that semen?' So he created woman and, after creating her, had intercourse with her. A man, therefore, should have intercourse with a woman." The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.2

Such passages just go to show that it was not just Judaism that was against homosexuality. The Israelites were not the "odd ones out" in affirming that sex is understood to be between a man and a woman.

As for why I gave this book four stars instead of five: I almost never give 5 stars and in the case of this book I did find some things to be desired.

1) There is an index, but not in the traditional sense. It simply lists an index of authors and works. Having both would have been preferable instead of having to skim through nearly 500 pages dense with footnotes and citations. It is for this reason that I don't cite any passages from this book in my review.

2) At one point he mentions the massive health costs to society as a result of allowing homosexuality to thrive. While this was an enticing argument, he gave no sources for that particular claim.

3) There were times where Gagnon went into other territory: head-coverings, divorce, adultery, etc. While there is nothing wrong with this per se, I felt that sometimes he dwelt too long on these tangential topics, almost to the point where I had forgotten as to why he even bothered to bring these up in the first place.

4) Finally, it's just a humorous nitpicking, but if you took a shot of alcohol for every time he used a phrase along the lines of "male-female complementarity" you would be very drunk indeed--if not dead.

OVERALL: While I didn't find this book to be the definitive book on the Bible's stance on Homosexuality, Gagnon comes awfully close, making strong arguments backed by a substantial amount of resources. More importantly, I am glad to see that he ultimately emphasizes (as Jesus Himself would have) that we should "hate the sin, but love the sinner."

This is a clear and concise presentation of what the bible has to say about homosexuality. It also tears down all the "so called" exegetical arguments against the Church's traditional view of the sin of homosexuality. A must read for those who want to be on the biblical side of this debate.

By Walter J. Caywood
The Bible and Homosexual Practice is an extraordinary book that anyone who has serious intent to understand what the Bible texts affirm about this subject must read. The comprehensiveness, scholarship and dialogue Gagnon engages in with those who disagree with him and propose very different interpretations of biblical texts is almost worth the cost of the book itself. Not only does he ably present and argue for the case for his own interpretation of the key texts in question but he fairly represents that of those who disagree with him and then effectively answers them. All this is done with respect, thorough scholarship and crisp and clear writing. This book is accessible for the non-scholar. I would especially recommend that those who think that Scripture can be (or should) interpreted to allow for homosexual practice read this book. A careful read may not change such persons minds on the issue but it will challenge them to seriously consider the traditional Jewish and Christian interpretation of these texts regarding sexual practices.
