Great overview, especially for the young reader
By Claude Buettner
I decided to give the book to my grand nephew rather than my brother-in-law who loves his Jeeps. The book is packed with facts and sidebars presented in a very modern format but lacks the historical depth that I was hoping for to thrill a knowledgeable Jeep follower.

About the Author
Sarah Lynn's three young sons taught her how to race toy cars. Together they?ve used their imaginations to create roads everywhere (couch, kitchen floor, dirt, sand, rug, and the bathtub, just for starters.) The idea for 1-2-3 Va-Va-Vroom! came to Sarah when she was teaching her oldest son to write numbers. They began imagining the pencil as a car drawing its own track. Those vroom-vroom sounds made writing numbers so much more fun. Sarah is also the author of Tip-Tap Pop, illustrated by Valeria Docampo. She lives with her family in Camarillo, California.

An Effective Langauge Series
By Paul S. Remington
The Expressways series of textbooks is designed to accelerate an English student's language mastery through exercises that teach visually through reading, tactilely through writing, and audibly through speaking. The student's abilities mature through practicing these skills for proper mastery of the English language.

My wife is a Chinese native who recently began English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at our local high school. The instructor uses these textbooks as the primary tool for learning. We have found them to be an effective and fun way to learn together as a couple and it has helped her language skills and personal confidence.

The exercises in the textbook are designed for a classroom setting or, if a classroom is not available, for practice with a partner. My wife benefits through classroom interaction twice a week and by working with me.

It is very important the student is able to work with someone to practice the lessons in the book. I would strongly suggest purchasing the companion workbook that accompanies this textbook for added exercises. There is also an audio component to this series that can be helpful, but if the student will be in a classroom or can practice daily with an English-speaking person, the audio is not necessary.

The conversational lessons in the textbook use iteration to teach. The student practices scripted conversations with a partner and phrases are changed to vary the meaning. The conversation remains similar each time, which reinforces the language structure, and the student learns through familiarity and practice. This is a crucial component to the learning process.

In addition to the interactive components are lessons that teach the correct grammatical structure of English sentences. Lessons force the student to think about what they're saying and practice the rules and logic in their mind before selecting the best answer. These grammatical lessons are reinforced through the practice conversations.

I would recommend the Expressways series for anyone who wants to increase their English mastery, but it is vitally important the student has a partner to assist with the lessons. This is best accomplished in a classroom setting at least once a week and/or with a friend or loved one close to the student. This is not a self-study textbook. While some of the lessons are accomplished alone, the real learning comes through verbal interaction and practice.

If you do not have access to a classroom or study partner, purchase the audio component along with the textbook and seek-out English speaking people to talk to.

With time, persistence, and practice, your English skills will increase, and the Expressways series of language textbooks will help you accomplish your goals.

   • How can we deal with fear?
   • How do I establish a regular meditation practice?

From Booklist
Chodron's plain English makes his beginner's guide nearly perfect for those new to Buddhism and those who simply want to learn more about one of the world's oldest, most misunderstood religions. In question-and-answer format, Chodron defines Buddhism's essence, which, in a nutshell, is to avoid harming others and help them as much as possible. He describes the goal of the Buddhist path and discusses the historical Buddha and his various manifestations. He answers some most-asked outsiders' questions concerning such matters as the best methods of meditation and how to define karma, and he clarifies Buddhist perspectives on modern issues, from euthanasia and abortion to the environment and animal rights. Clearly, succinctly, and without talking down to readers, Chodron strives throughout to bring people together and help them understand the tradition. To outsiders, Buddhism can seem cold and mysterious, but Chodron unravels some of its mysteries and helps dispel that perceived coldness. June Sawyers

Bought for a friend who wanted an introduction to Dharma
By James Woods
I'm glad I did. The format is questions the the Abess. She answers in clear and straightforward style.
I intended to look through it before giving it to my friend and ended up reading almost the entire book.
There are many ways to be introduced to Tibetan Buddhism. This is a very satisfactory first book.

I would also recommend Thich Nhat Hanh, and of course H.H. The Dalai Lama. They both write with wisdom and clarity that are suitable for new students and seasoned meditators.
Many of my friends who read Dharma, not as a spiritual path, but to make sense out of the crazy times in which we live also receive benefit from Pema Chodron's books.

A good book, but not what I was looking for.
By Cory M
Buddhism for Beginners is a good book for those with questions about Buddhism, specifically a Tibetan form of Buddhism, unfortunately for me I was looking for a books on Zen Buddhism and didn't look closely enough at this book. Anyway, it really is a well written and thorough book it deserves 5 stars, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

The view from inside
By Jeremy Aldrich
This is a Westerner-friendly discussion of Buddhist beliefs and practices presented in a question-and-answer format. The 21 chapters cover Buddhist beliefs and scriptures, rituals, the role of women, modern social issues like abortion, and practical tips for raising children and dealing with non-Buddhist relatives. The author attempts to fairly represent a variety of Buddhist traditions in a positive light. As a non-Buddhist I found it to be occasionally jargon-y but probably about as clear and straightforward as a "believer" can present their own religion. I think this book would be especially helpful for people who have already decided to embrace Buddhism or who grew up in Buddhist homes but don't really understand the religion they wish to practice. The Kindle price is a few dollars cheaper than the print edition both on Amazon and in local bookstores, which is always nice to see!

“Rich, romantic, beautifully drawn and utterly compelling” Jane Green, New York Times bestselling author

Life is short. Sometimes you have to take a chance…

Two single parents, Scott and Frankie, meet by chance.

Their homes are thousands of miles apart: Frankie lives somewhat chaotically with her children on the shoreline of North Norfolk, while Scott’s life is in the mountains of British Columbia. Distance divides them – but it seems that a million little things connect them. A spark ignites, one so strong that it dares them to take a risk.

But fate has one more trick in store…

There are some truths about life and family we only learn when we grow up. There are some we never thought we’d have to.

Absolutely wonderful!! :)
By kelly
How do you write a book review when you are lost for words after reading the book? Well, I guess we will find out soon enough… ahem…

Freya North is one of my favourite authors, I would say she is definitely in my top two! I am up to date with all her books so the last two years I have waited patiently (honest) for her next novel to be released. I was not disappointed with “The Way Back Home” and once again with her latest release “The Turning Point.” I was left highly satisfied, so much so that I had to stare at the wall for a few seconds after reading the last page, just to take it all in.

How do I even begin to explain how this book made me feel? How do I put into words just the sheer joy of the way Freya writes? Within reading the first few pages, I couldn’t help but smile as the talent of her writing shone through the pages and made me think “yep, that’s why she’s my favourite” The detail that goes into her novels is just incredible, her descriptions of the places they are set in, (this story taking place in both Norfolk and Pemberton, British Columbia) jump off the page and you feel like you become richer with the knowledge of places you have never been before. This novel follows the lives of Frankie and Scott, but you don’t end up just knowing them, you end up knowing their whole family and you don’t just know them, you care about them. You want to know how Frankie’s children, Sam and Annabel, are and what they are up to, you want to know what movies Scott’s doing music for next or if Frankie is any closer to reaching her book deadline. Freya has a way of making you connect with every character you meet. This story stays with you and you feel like Scott and Frankie become a part of your life as you truly get a sense of who they are, how they live and what they mean to each other.

I’ve said this before but I feel I have to say it again, I don’t like giving you the whole story in my reviews, you can read what the book is about online and of course on the back or inside of the book. I don’t feel like I could do the book justice if I give you my brief version as we all most likely read things differently. All I can offer is my thoughts that this was such a refreshing book for me, it was a welcome change to what I have been reading lately and it was an absolutely wonderful welcome back Freya North to my bookshelf (In America I only have The Way Back Home and It was getting lonely! )

So, if you are looking for a beautifully written, emotional ride that will take your breath away, please pick up a copy and add Freya North to your must read author list! Now, I will sit here and wait for next year! :p

A love story that resonates...
By KimGM
Freya North's the Turning Point starts with a chance meeting--first on the Tube in London and then later in a hotel bar. That chance meeting leads to Frankie (a children's book author) and Scott (a Canadian musician) embarking on what starts as a one-night stand and evolves quickly into a long-distance relationship. It is, quite simply, two people finding the loves of their lives after initial missteps with other people.

As they struggle to deal with the logistics and the distance, the doubts and the initial reticence of family and friends, Frankie and Scott throw themselves into the business of loving each other...and their love is intense and rich and beautiful. So many wonderful moments depicted, so many times when their frustration at the distance is palpable. And having been through nearly three years of a long distance relationship when I was in the US and the love of my life was in Sweden, I could relate completely to Frankie's longing to be elsewhere, even when she knew that staying in Norfolk was best for her children.

Heart-wrenching, beautifully written and packing an emotional punch that will resonate...the Turning Point is the sort of novel that doesn't leave you. I finished reading it a week ago and I am still thinking about Frankie and Scott. A fantastic novel, Freya North. I can't wait to read your next offering.

Fantastic Read!
By Carolyn M
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I am a huge fan of Freya's work, but whether you've read every one of her novels or this is the first, this is an extraordinary read. Her characters are your best friends. Her story opens your imagination. I went down a road I didn't expect and I adored it. I thought I knew what it was about and that was great, but then when it was over, I realized it was about so much more. Somehow Freya takes the simple and makes it quite remarkable. I can't wait for her next one.

On Politics: A Carnival of Buncombe (Maryland Paperback Bookshelf), by H. L. Mencken

"Has the art of politics no apparent utility? Does it appear to be unqualifiedly ratty, raffish, sordid, obscene, and low down, and its salient virtuousi a gang of unmitigated scoundrels? Then let us not forget its high capacity to soothe and tickle the midriff, its incomparable services as a maker of entertainment."―-from On Politics

With a style that combined biting sarcasm with the "language of the free lunch counter," Mencken shook politics and politicians for nearly half a century. The political arena afforded Mencken a special opportunity to showcase his talents. He despised pretentiousness and hypocrisy and found numerous, easy targets among politicians. But while he could be merciless in attacking local and national leaders, Mencken always interspersed his scathing commentaries with entertaining exaggerations and high humor. This collection of seventy political pieces drawn from Mencken's famous Monday columns in the Baltimore Evening Sun during the twenties and thirties shows the "Sage of Baltimore" at his satirical best. While social attitudes may have changed, the value of Mencken's words on American politics offers us a timeless perspective.

Review

A collection of the master's exuberant political reportage... It is Mencken's festive air and the unchained delight he takes in balderdash and bamboozle that are so lacking in today's political commentators.

Nothing Has Changed
By A Customer
Mencken was the UberMensch. We are all monkeys beside him. Some of his best work, in my opinion, can be found in this collection. The America he covered (or uncovered) so masterfully almost a century ago is eerily similar to the one we live in today. In fact, nothing has changed. Computers may have replaced typewriters, but the Boobery remain the same, not to mention the politicians who so easily manipulate them. Read this book and evolve!

A great book by one of the great American humorists
By Jay M. Dougherty
If you are looking for a book on H.L. Mencken, I would highly recommend "On Politics." This book highlights Mencken at his most acidic through his constant verbal jabs at the "holy" Woodrow Wilson, "Silent" Cal, the "royalist" Hoover, Roosevelt Minor and the stupidity of Warren Harding.(Note: Take a look at what Mencken writes about Harding's mangling of the english language and then compare it to what some modern columnists write about George W's handling of the language. It is truly scary how history repeats itself.)
Besides being an utterly hilarious look at the aforementioned presidents and American society in general, this book is quite eye-opening in terms of showing Mencken's political leanings. I always thought that Mencken was a pure liberatarian with his constant attacks on the New Deal and FDR. Actually, Mencken somewhat liked FDR up until he was elected. Mencken also sides with progressive politicians such as Robert M. LaFollete and expresses sympathy (or as much "sympathy" as the great misanthrope can express) for jailed socialist leader Eugene Debs. Nevertheless, all of the aforementioned people also receive Mencken verbal lashings.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in early 20th century American politics or for anyone with a slightly cynical bent. On days when you feel slightly misanthropic and (mad) at the world, read "On Politics" and you feel much, much better.
Favorite Mencken Quote: "All artists are idiots."

Mencken on politics
By Jeffrey Reed
This book is a collection of political columns, written mostly for the Baltimore Sun, that H.L. Mencken penned in the early twentieth century. In virtually every piece, Mencken advances the view that politicians are third-rate men, devoid of convictions, willing to follow any platform that will make them electable. The only politicians Mencken likes are those that he believes have spine. He detests politicians that waver, particularly those that try to sit on both sides of the fence on the abolition issue.
Mencken is at his best when he covers presidential campaigns, as he does in many columns in this collection. He revels in the empty rhetoric he hears, and describes the bilge to the reader in truculent and uncompromising language. The whole art of politics, to him, is circus-like. The pols are clowns and their election speeches are the main act.
Anyone looking for sober commentary should look elsewhere. But anyone looking for extremely witty, well-written and combative columns should pick up this collection. There is probably no better example of attack-dog journalism out there, nor is there likely a more entertaining way to get a quick history lesson on the important political figures and issues of the early twentieth century. Enjoy!

On the Study Methods of Our Time, by Giambattista Vico

Giambattista Vico's first original work of philosophy, On the Study Methods of Our Time (1708–9) takes up the contemporary "quarrel between the ancients and the moderns" and provides a highly interesting statement of the nature of humanistic education. This edition makes available again Elio Gianturco's superb 1965 English translation of a work generally regarded as the earliest statement by Vico of the fundamentals of his position.

An important contribution to the development of the scientism-versus-humanism debate over the comparative merits of classical and modern culture, this book lays out Vico's powerful arguments against the compartmentalization of knowledge which results from the Cartesian world view. In opposition to the arid logic of Cartesianism, Vico here celebrates the humanistic tradition and posits the need for a comprehensive science of humanity which recognizes the value of memory and imagination.

For this edition, Donald Phillip Verene has written a new preface placing the work in the context of the ongoing renaissance in Vico studies and added a chronology of Vico's major writings. He has also translated into English for the first time Vico's last public statement, The Academies and the Relation between Philosophy and Eloquence (1737), a short oration that presents his final views on wisdom, the unity of knowledge, and rhetoric―themes he had first adumbrated in the Study Methods.

On the Study Methods of Our Time remains a key text for anyone interested in the development's of Vico's thought and serves as a concise introduction to his work. Scholars and students in such disciplines as the history of philosophy, intellectual history, literary theory, rhetoric, and the history and philosophy of education will find this volume helpful and fascinating.

The Best Book for Cello Beginners
By Justin the Chef
I'm 27 years old and currently learning to play the cello. I've bought this book along with the Suzuki books/CD and various others. I think this is the best book to start with if you have no prior cello playing experience. With the Suzuki books you're playing more songs, while this book consists of a lot of simple exercises. For example, Suzuki for Cello Book 1 has 17 exercises/etudes, whereas Essential Elements has 193. The exercises in Suzuki are generally a little longer and closer to full songs. Suzuki Book 1 has 23 pages while this book has 48 pages.

The biggest down side to Suzuki is that there's absolutely no instructional information, and while both books assume you're working with a teacher, I think it would be harder to progress with the Suzuki book if you do not have a teacher.

I see this book as more of a prequel to the Suzuki books, but there's obviously some overlap. If you finish this book you'll likely move through the first few Suzuki books pretty quickly.

This book's overall goal seems to be teaching students how to sight read musical notation. Lots of time is spent counting beats and looking at notes and playing them on the cello as you read them. For a book that's focused more on the subtleties of technique I'd check out "The Art of Cello Playing" by Louis Potter Jr., or I'd rely on a teacher for that information.

As mentioned, this book comes with a DVD and CD, and the DVD actually has SOME instructional video, but only about 15 minutes. The rest of the DVD is just the audio of all 193 practice tracks. Also, the audio CD for Suzuki books 1 and 2 is purchased separately and is priced at about $14. This book is about the same price as Suzuki book 1 but comes with the audio CD and DVD, so I think it's also a better value.

This Essential Elements book starts with plucking the individual strings (pizzicato) and ends on the piano accompanied Bach minuet Number 2. Suzuki Book 1 stars on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star variations" and ends on the exact same Bach minuet.

What I like about Essential Elements is that it starts you off at the most basic possible level. First, you're just plucking the strings on the cello, learning where the notes correspond to the strings on the cello. There's a few exercises that prepare you for the bow without actually using it yet, but use of the bow isn't until Exercise 47. The idea is to cultivate the left hand first, and after you're comfortable with that it introduces using the right hand along with the left hand. With Suzuki you're using the bow on the first exercise, and more focus is spent on listening to the recordings than reading music. (Suzuki believed people learned languages best by listening.)

The strength of this book is that each short exercise is slightly harder than the last, usually introducing a new technical problem for each exercise. Each exercise is set up as a short and unique melody to keep it more fun. Exercises range from repeated single notes, to scales, to kids melodies (old macdonald, twinkle twinkle, frere jacques, baa baa black sheep), to melodies everyone knows (simple gifts, jingle bells, happy birthday, banana boat song, william tell overture), to various American, English, and French folk melodies.

I have been practicing cello for a while so I completed the first 46 exercises in one day. Then I did about 20 the follow day, and then about four or so a day after that. Each exercise is a little tougher than the last, but not too tough to be out of reach, so you do feel a sense of accomplishment after you finish each one.

I've found the best way to practice ALL of the exercises after #46 is to sight read them as you count beats. Even if it calls for the bow play with pizzicato first. Next do the same thing but now try it with the bow. If you've got that down then try playing along with the accompanying CD/DVD. Did you play it without any mistakes? If so then move to the next exercise, otherwise keep practicing until you get it.

If you can read music you already have a head start on this book, but if you can't I strongly recommend this book over the Suzuki ones--at least initially. Essential Elements has taught me how to read music as I play, where the Suzuki books assume you already know how to read music, or that your instructor will show you. This book's many simple exercises manage to push you along without overwhelming you. There's music that accompanies each exercise and it's there to help you train your ear. With the music it's easier to tell if you're playing in tune or if you're a little off.

I didn't mean for this to be long or a bunch of Suzuki bashing. I think you should buy this book, the Suzuki books, and every cello book you can afford. You should also watch cello tutorials (and professional performances) on YouTube and find a teacher at your local university. The more resources you have to help you learn the more successful you will be! That's true for anything! However, if I could only purchase one book this one would be it. I expect it to keep me busy for a couple months.

This is a great book to start with. After the first day I was impressed enough to purchase book 2 and 3. The only thing that could be improved upon would be more video tutorials on the DVD.

Loved the free DVD or download that came with this book. Great price point and useful information for beginner cello player. As mother of 9-year-old cello player I have enjoyed the DVD feature. Now if I could just get the cello player to review it.

I really like this. I sent for the CD and I don't understand why it doesn't show more than just how to properly hold my cello and bow. I waited for it to show more on the cd but nothing more happens. I really like the book, though.

Great choice
By Ben R. Boule
I'm in my mid-30s when I bought this. About 12 years ago I had taken 2 years of lessons with a teacher before moving on. This is not the same method I was using with my teacher. I cannot remember which one I was using at that time but this one is better in my opinion. The extra theory in this books is very good, and even with a teacher I did not pick up on this stuff as well the last time around. The very beginning of the book does not even use musical notation and has some very good exercises for helping a beginner develop an awareness of where the notes are on the keyboard.

I can't really judge the difficulty, as almost immediately (within a day or two) most of what I knew came back and I could play most of this book. But the progression looks good. The musical selection seems typical, some will like it some will not.

A good beginner book for adults
By Jim
These newer adult piano books for adults are similar. I liked the music in this book over the Alfred series, but there is still overlap. Choose one series and just keep playing! It will take time, maybe several years, until a beginner has the skill and knowledge to play those beautiful and complex pieces that draw us to to the piano. Adults tend to give up early feeling that it takes too much time and commitment or progress doesn't come fast enough. A competent and experienced teacher will be an asset in learning piano. A teacher watching for proper form is very important to avoid injury from bad habits. Books don't teach form or correct you for getting lazy.

The music theory is light in this book and assumes that the reader has no prior musical knowledge. I recommend supplementing with a music theory book.

This is a really good beginner piano book for adults
By Rebecca P
This is a really good beginner piano book for adults. I'm taking piano lessons at a community college and this is the required text. When I ordered it from Amazon, I didn't realize it was just the book and that the CDs weren't part of the purchase. The text at the college bookstore included the CDs but it was about twice the price. My piano instructor said I didn't really need the CDs so I was glad to save the money. I'm really enjoying my piano lessons and the book has some interesting pieces even for beginners.

Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America's Children (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public), by Gerald Marko

In this incisive examination of lead poisoning during the past half century, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner focus on one of the most contentious and bitter battles in the history of public health. Lead Wars details how the nature of the epidemic has changed and highlights the dilemmas public health agencies face today in terms of prevention strategies and chronic illness linked to low levels of toxic exposure. The authors use the opinion by Maryland’s Court of Appeals—which considered whether researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s prestigious Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) engaged in unethical research on 108 African-American children—as a springboard to ask fundamental questions about the practice and future of public health. Lead Wars chronicles the obstacles faced by public health workers in the conservative, pro-business, anti-regulatory climate that took off in the Reagan years and that stymied efforts to eliminate lead from the environments and the bodies of American children.

"Lead Wars" clearly shows that the scandalous and tragic history of lead is one that our society is doomed to repeat over and over again unless we develop and fight for better safeguards against chemicals and new technology. --Helen Jupiter"Mother Nature Network" (03/26/2013)"

A fascinating new book. --Howard Markel"PBS Newshour The Rundown Blog" (03/29/2013)"

"The prolific team of Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner has done it again. Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America s Children is a thoroughly researched, passionate, and gripping history of a major public health problem. . . . Lead Wars challenges us to take better care of our children by fighting those industries that appear to regard them especially poor black and Latino children as disposable."--Elizabeth Fee"Health Affairs" (10/01/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“The story Rosner and Markowitz tell of generations of children gravely damaged by promiscuous dispersal of lead, and the persistent attempts made to evade responsibility for the harms caused, is both true and shocking. This book will not just educate future environmental and health leaders, it should outrage them.”—Richard J. Jackson MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, Environmental Health Sciences, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health

"Lead Wars argues that the tragedy of lead is one that our society is doomed to repeat again and again unless we develop better safeguards to protect us against chemicals and new technology. This book is a "must read" for public health professionals as well as for political scientists, social historians and for all who care about the future of America's children."—Philip J. Landrigan MD, Ethel H. Wise Professor of Community Medicine and Chairman in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine

"Can being poor justify differing standards for research or a focus merely on harm reduction and the politically feasible? Markowitz and Rosner make the compelling case that in public health the practical and possible may in the end be immoral and dangerous, and a consequence of the war on science. A necessary read for anyone who cares about public health, the role of government, children, medical experimentation and environmental justice."—Susan M. Reverby, McLean Professor in the History of Ideas and Professor of Women's and Gender Studies, Wellesley College

“Lead poisoning remains a tragedy (and scandal) of immense proportions, and the authors utilize new sources—including previously unexamined court records—to tell a story that is as gripping as it is important.”—Robert N. Proctor, Professor of the History of Science at Stanford University and author of Cancer Wars

"This book tells the story of a public health tragedy affecting millions of children, the determined doctors who tried to help, and an industry propaganda campaign which prolonged and worsened the tragedy. For as long as powerful corporations manipulate politicians and public opinion to profit from dangerous products, this will remain an important story for our country."—Sheldon Whitehouse, United States Senator

Lead Wars makes clear the public health dangers we face if we continue to ignore this corporate strategy that defines “acceptable” levels of risk for the thousands of chemicals in use. It brings home the importance now more than ever of taking a precautionary approach to managing toxic chemicals. This book is a must for any activist who wants to understand the strategies polluters use to continue business as usual. —Lois Marie Gibbs, Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment & Justice

"In this outstanding book, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner utilize historical scholarship to expose a major tragedy in recent public health: the failure to protect children from the harms of lead in our environment. Despite the fact that the toxic effects of lead have been known for centuries, they show—using previously unavailable documents—how the lead industry has protected their profits at public expense, despite their explicit knowledge of its many dangers. Lead Wars brings this tragic history to light in a narrative that integrates deep investigation and analysis with compelling advocacy and compassion for children who continue to be at risk from one of the world’s best-known toxins."—Allan M. Brandt, Professor of the History of Medicine at Harvard University, and author of The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America

"Markowitz and Rosner have majestically woven the key characters and elements of the history of lead poisoning into a captivating narrative that exposes a tremendous and terrifying truth; unless it serves the needs of private enterprise, public health is incapable of controlling the causes of chronic disease and disability. In place of prevention, we have settled for partial solutions. Everyone who has an interest in public health, health policy or history should read this book."—Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, Clinician Scientist, Child & Family Research Institute BC Children’s Hospital and Professor of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC

About the Author

"Lead Wars" should be required reading in all medical schools
By K. DAVEY
Lead paint and "tetraethyl lead" poisoning of children resulting in brain damage and death represents one of the most hideous public health disasters in America.

The Ethyl Gasoline Corporation manufactured "tetraethyl lead" because when mixed with gas, it improved vehicle performance and fuel economy. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner wrote that "lead became part of the air Americans breathed when, in 1923, lead was introduced into gasoline to give cars more power. With the dramatic growth of this vast industry, every American child, parent, and neighbor began to systematically incorporate into their bodies a toxic heavy metal that was already known to be poisoning workers in the United States and elsewhere."

For decades, Medical Director of the Ethyl Corp., Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., gave "scientific cover" for Ethyl, and became the principal defender of keeping "highly profitable" lead in gasoline, which contributed to the poisoning of millions of American children from 1928 until TEL or tetraethyl lead was outlawed in 1986. Industry-owned research facilities conducted lead studies, usually with pro-lead results; research was carefully crafted to benefit industrial sponsors, not the health of U.S. citizens. Incredibly, under oath in 1966, Dr. Kehoe told Congress that he and his colleagues at the Kettering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio "had been looking for 30 years for evidence of bad effects from leaded gasoline in the general population and had found none." Kehoe argued that lead is "normal" in the human body and even recommended, for the sake of progress, elevating the lead level in gasoline. There was, he said, "not the slightest evidence" of harm from airborne lead, and claimed that leaded gasoline posed no risk at all to public health.

Needless to say, Kehoe was tragically wrong. Herbert Needleman, M.D., a courageous pediatrician at Temple University discovered a direct correlation between lowered IQ and increased lead content of baby teeth collected from children in North Philadelphia. He got the idea from the 1950s, when strontium 90, a by-product of atomic testing in Utah, became a component in the teeth and skeletons of babyboomers across the USA. Needleman's research in the 1960s indicated that "leaded" gas exhaust poisoned babies both inside and outside the womb. A recent study found that children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have elevated average blood-lead levels 20-30% higher than children without ADHD. The central nervous system of a fetus or young child, undergoing rapid changes, is particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. For his pioneering research, Dr. Needleman, now in his late 80s, should have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Many European countries banned the use of lead-based paint as early as 1909. The U.S. lead industry "chose to run massive marketing and promotion campaigns all through the first half of the twentieth century despite their knowledge that lead paint was causing children to go into comas, suffer convulsions, and die." The USA allowed the continued use of lead in paint until 1978, but lead does not biodegrade. Today, 2% of American children are diagnosed with lead poisoning.

The demise of Kehoe's leaded gas was accelerated when Clair Patterson, a geochemist at Caltech analyzed core drillings of ice in Antarctica indicating that concentrations of lead in the environment had increased an alarming 350 percent between 1930 and 1965. When leaded gasoline was marketed nationwide in the late 1920s and in the 1930s, the frequency of childhood lead poisoning reported in medical journals increased dramatically. Unfortunately, scientists in the United States have lost funding and have been exposed to lawsuits (or much worse) after their evidence-based research produced results that threatened powerful economic interests. When Drs. Alice Hamilton, Harriet Hardy, Randolph Byers, Clair Patterson, and Herbert Needleman presented unwelcome lead data, petrochemical interests devoted considerable resources attacking them personally. Suppression of unwelcome lead research and fiendish harassment of independent scientists was not uncommon, particularly during the pre-EPA era.

While children continue to be exposed to lead, those born in the 1990s have higher IQs than those born 20 years earlier, when lead was lavishly dumped along U.S. roads and highways. Based on the government's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, about 68 million American children experienced toxic exposure from leaded gasoline during the Ethyl era. Between 1976 and 1996, removal of lead from gasoline precipitated nearly a 90% drop in children's blood-lead levels according to the CDC.

Markowitz and Rosner remind us that society is measured by the treatment of its children. "For more than a hundred years, we have knowingly poisoned our children and destroyed the future of millions of our citizens." Lead in paint and gas has been foisted on us by "rapacious industries that have knowingly profited from our human suffering." The challenge for young pediatricians is that lead poisoning is a preventable disease.

Excellent book
By Nick Lees
I am a Professor in Environmental Management and found the material in this book to be very informative and thought provoking. My intent is to use the background and facts presented here in a case study on the politics of toxic substances in my class on the Interactions of Hazardous Materials. My industrial background included first hand experience with the Formaldehyde question back when the EPA and OSHA were considering significant regulatory changes after the initial valid rat study. I was employed by the industrial sector at the time and we were very intent on showing the true science behind the question, yet we still had the best interests of industry on the table at all times. I can readily see how the authors have honestly treated this dangerous exposure to the adverse health effects of very small amounts of lead in our environment. The actions on the part of the industrial sector here are deplorable and go beyond the effort to put the true science of the issue before the public and the health agency regulators.

A "must read" for parents of young children and those in the public health field.

This is a well-written, easy to read, accurate account of how lead became so pervasive in the environment in general and in housing in particular. The book documents the struggles the City of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University made to eliminate lead poisoning as a threat to the public health.

The book also outlines how the same political and economic pressures apply to other substances, such as bisphenol A.

The book contains extensive references to support the statements.
