About the Author
Komilla Sutton started her astrological studies in Bombay, India, with Dr. Ajit Sinha in 1979. She moved to England in 1982 and now works full time as an astrologer. In December 1996 Komilla and Andrew Foss co-founded The British Association for Vedic Astrology (BAVA), which holds regular meetings and an annual conference attracting speakers from all over the world. As well as running a busy practice numbering hundreds of clients, Komilla teaches Vedic astrology to students in Romsey and London, and helps many more students via her correspondence course. She lectures and hold workshops on Vedic astrology throughout the UK, Europe and the US and is on the examining board for the American Council for Vedic Astrology. She has written two other books, 'The Essentials of Vedic Astrology '(The Wessex Astrologer 1999) and 'Vedic Astrology' (Collins and Brown 2000).

This book is like all Komilla Sutton's work, clear, precise and well organised. Its easy to find everything and the layout is very easy on the eye and the mind. Other people can make a subject sound complicated, Komilla writes in a way that you can follow and understand.

Untangling Your Purpose - Revealing the Power of the Soul

The best book on the Lunar Nodes by any astrologer that I have read. Komilla Sutton brings her usual clear and organised structure to the complex and often murky waters of the Lunar Nodes - Rahu and Ketu. Expanding on the introductory material to Rahu and Ketu given in her earlier book you she provides wise and clear descriptions of the lunar nodes in the signs, the houses and the constellations/nakshatras. The conflict between the two points, what it means and how to work with them for transformation is also explored. The section on the Rahu and Ketu dashas and their sub-dashas during other planetary dashas, the transits of Rahu & Ketu through the houses, signs and aspects to the other planets are also elegantly described. The Lunar Nodes - Crisis & Redemption guides the student and astrologer to a deep understanding of how working with the lesson of the lunar nodes unlocks the power and potential of the natal chart, heals and transforms karmic burdens and releases the karmic potential. In Komilla's usual style the book is organised clearly and the infomation is presented from least complex to more advanced techniques, so it's easy to follow. An indispensable work for the Vedic astrologer and the Western Astrologer seeking to really understand the purpose and impact of the Lunar nodes. most comprehensive

I am owning this work since 1969. I find it exhaustive, well organized, a treasure to hunt for rare words and expressions. It may not contain any new terms since around 1990, but with it you can translate anything you find in the Hebrew bible, or the Talmud.

Columns numbered, not pages; modern Hebrew, not biblical; broadest, but old-fashioned

Only the columns are numbered and not the pages. In the 1st edition in 8 (4+4) volumes and the following smaller sized in 2 (1+1), 4,270+2,860 refers to the number of columns - 2 per page. Hence the number of pages is 2,135+1,430. In subsequent editions from the 1960s and those titled 'Revised' from the 1970s and 1980s in 2 (1+1) or 3 (2+1) volumes with a 24-col./12-page Hebrew-English supplement added, those numbers are 4,270+2,884 and 2,135+1,442 respectively. In the New Enlarged Edition published since 1990 in 3 (2+1) or 5 (3+2) volumes - 4,270+2,932 and 2,135+1,466. This is just an old-fashioned dictionary of modern Hebrew and not of the modern "learner's" type nor a dictionary of biblical Hebrew. It contains only the entries and their translations without the pronunciation, examples, etc., but many of them. The Alcalay's English-Hebrew+Hebrew-English is the most comprehensive available.

This is a fantastic dictionary. It's only flaw is that it is a little bit dated and does not have the most recent slang. Otherwise it is a fantastic tool!

Well worth the read!

This is a truly fascinating work! The depth of Snyder's supporting research is astounding. She really did her homework. Most likely, there are few attorneys "in the trenches" aware of what is/has recently occurred worldwide with changes in legal structures - I certainly wasn't until a friend challenged me to read this book. Do NOT miss going to the author's website that fleshes out all of her interviews. They should be required reading for business students and lawyers.
Backed up by all this research, interspersed with stories, Snyder asks some very tough questions for the legal community, "If the laws of the United States accord to the legal profession the exclusive privilege to serve the entire market, shouldn't the counterpart to that exclusive privilege be the corresponding obligation to serve the entire market? If it is the legal profession - and the legal profession only - that has the right, by law, to serve the legal services market, then shouldn't the legal profession have the obligation, by law, to develop and implement solutions that do effectively serve the entire market?" The book is not full of "finger pointing" but is a well developed, full analysis of where legal services are in this nation, how they've recently developed in some competing nations and exactly how the legal world is changing, and could change, around us.
Personally, my worldview of legal services has shifted. I have the author to thank for that. Definitely an insightful and timely book, especially for business and legal services students and professionals. Definitely worth the read.

Compelling reading on the pros and cons of non lawyer ownership of law firms.

I had the pleasure of first meeting and hearing Laura Snyder present at a small professionals conference we both attended in Hawaii in 2013.

Laura spoke knowledgeably and passionately about the transformation that was then happening to the UK legal profession based on her research,her discussions with many encumbent law firms,several disruptors and start ups,regulators and commentators. Laura is correct as she states in her book that when she sat down next to me after making her presentation I did ask her "what are you now going to do with all that knowledge and research?"

The rest as they say is now history.Laura has now undertaken even more detailed research and interviewed countless of people involved in the legal professions of the UK, US, Canada and Australasia, culminating in this almanac of how legal services can and are being democratized- essentially by the use of alternative business structures. If there are deeper and more meaningful research and stories out there of the pros and cons of law firms being owned and operated by those that do not possess a law degree I do not know of same.

Laura has interviewed some of the most informed,creative and smartest professionals involved in law and obtained their views and documented an understanding of their own personal stories which proves compelling reading.

Whether you are a lawyer who supports greater deregulation of the profession or not;an advisor or commentator to the legal profession; a regulator or a law society;a client of the profession;an undergraduate about to enter the profession;an academic or a student of the study of professions and how they might face increasing challenges and opportunities in the 21st century;or simply an interested observer on how vested interests can create obstacles to those seeking better access to justice, then this is a welcome read. You will not be disappointed.

It should be mandatory reading for any US attorney.

This book is an essential and important contribution to the discussion of alternative business structures and is a must-read for anyone interested in how legal services are provided the US (as well as in Canada).

Laura Snyder lays out and then dismantles the arguments opposing alternative business structures in a methodical and convincing fashion. Most powerful are the interviews that Ms. Snyder included in her book, with a variety of players at the forefront of these changes in the legal services marketplace; they provide firsthand storytelling about the creation and development of alternative business structures in several anglo-saxon countries. There is even a great website — “notjustforlawyers.com” — that provides the full text of these absorbing interviews.

The extraordinary treatise provides an illuminating survey of the the rise of alternative business structures in the context of the regulation of legal services, in a manner that is comprehensive, unique and highly compelling. It’s a fascinating read.

Taibbi, hilarious as usual and with his customary bite, looks back on the 2016 election

Matt Taibbi is my number one favorite campaigning journalist and political commentator, never afraid to expose chicanery, hypocrisy and sleaze under every rock he kicks over. His writing just gets better and better: most of ICP is not just laugh-out-loud funny, but is so on-the-money it occasionally had me rolling on the floor with laughter and crying “Yes! Yes! He’s nailed it!”

At the center of Taibbi’s insightful series of essays on the 2016 election campaign and its aftermath is the larger-than-life figure of Donald Trump (“a figure of almost supernatural shallowness…destined to be buried under a mountain of outlandish promises, in the process leading thousands of hoodwinked followers off the cliff of history”), but the book is not just about the new POTUS. Taibbi absolutely nails the cast of characters in the GOP’s ‘Clown Car’ – the 2016 prospective candidates including Trump - but also under scrutiny are the Bernie Sanders phenomenon, HRC’s insipid, uninspiring campaign (“an overconfident and incompetent ruling class that was ten miles up its own backside when it should have been listening to the anger percolating in the population”), the political beltway bubble and how it works within unwritten boundaries now shattered by Trump, and the US news media to which Taibbi belongs which is “becoming more and more indistinguishable from entertainment media” and at whose door, above all, Taibbi lays the responsibility for getting Trump elected in November.

One caution: if you’re a RS reader and follow Taibbi’s regular pieces, you may have read many of these essays during 2015 & 2016 in print or on the RS website. However, there’s new stuff here as well. The long introduction and shorter epilogue for example offer a prescient if depressing summing-up of our current political landscape, how we got here and where we might be headed. So despite the fact that much of ICP has already been published as RS articles by Taibbi, the book as a whole tells a story so coherent, so concise and so entertaining, all in Taibbi’s inimitable literate and comic style, that it can be unreservedly recommended.

Insanity Won

If you want to know how, this is your book. While the focus is on Trump the beginning and ending analysis includes democrats, journalists and an understanding of the bubble in which most resided. After completing just 10% of the book I stopped to recommend it to friends.

Taibbi's style of writing caused me to howl with laughter often. But equally engaging was his month by month detailed summary of the progress of this insanity. This is the most pleasurable yet profound analysis we are likely to find of what occurred.

While shocked at the outcome, as most of us were including the "clown" I feel vindicated that in retrospect I saw the rationale described in these pages. Whether you agree with this rationale or not you'll enjoy the ride that takes you on the journey.

Fun read from a different perspective

Although most of the book repeats articles written for Rolling Stone, the new Introduction and Epilogue, written seemingly minutes before the book hit the market, make the book worth the purchase price. Taibbi takes a meta-level view of politics and the election. He's "balanced" not in the sense that he criticizes each party the same number of times, but in that he explains how each party, albeit in different ways, have become the supplicants to corporations. The most interesting piece is his explanation of how, contrary to the views of hack Democratic pundits, the youth actually "got it right" in supporting Bernie Sanders. A great and entertaining read.

Brian Tomlinson is a Visiting Professor at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He has worked in Japan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, the UK, Vanuatu and Zambia and has given presentations in over fifty countries. He is Founder and President of MATSDA and has published many articles and books on materials development and on language acquisition.Hitomi Masuhara is a Visiting Fellow at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. She has worked in Japan, Oman, Singapore and the UK and has given conference presentations in over thirty countries. She is Secretary of MATSDA and has published many articles and books on materials development and on language acquisition.
