My son is 7 and loves jokes, and this is a great collection. Joke books can be iffy if you haven't paged through them, but the jokes are pretty good in this book and it has excellent pictures.

As a desk reference this book is not intended to be a replacement for a textbook on the subject, but to provide a well indexed quick guide to problems likely to confront the clinical worker.

In addition, the clinical worker is likely to find this to be a useful book to share with patients seeding additional information about particular conditions. The ability to show such patients (or their parents) brief descriptions of conditions being discussed is often a help. This is especially true in those cases where diagrams are included that can be shown to illustrate the condition being discussed.

This is the first edition of this book. It is remarkable in that so much information is included. It is such a useful concept that I expect there will be future editions over time and that it will become one of the standards kept on everyone's desk.

Extensive guide to clinical geneticist

This reference book has provided useful notes for a list of diseases and conditions one may need to look up from time to time. Geneticists would benefit the most, especially in my opinion, ones that have not specifically worked in the clinical field. As mediterrenean folks, we were surprised to find out FMF was left out. Some other common dysmorphic features were not as comprehensive as others. Nevertheless, I think this book is a must in a hospital genetician's library; hence the title "desk reference".

Lawrence O. Gostin is Associate Dean and the Linda D. and Timothy J. O'Neill Professor of Global Health Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he directs the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law. Ok, bit dated

This is a good reader summarizing relevant Public Health Law issues. However, it's not the most current and given the drastic technological advances and public health law issues raised within the past few years, it's more than overdue for a refresh. Also, it sometimes mentions cases that are foundational but doesn't do case examples for these cases, rather applying the specific test or ruling of the foundational case to others. This just seems odd as you need to understand how and why the test originated in the first place. My only otehr criticism would be that it's WAAAAAY WAAAAY WAAAAY to repetitive of the text book.

About the Author
G. Lee Bowie received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Stanford University and has taught at University of Michigan, University of Mass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College. Currently he is Professor of Philosophy at Mount Holyoke College.

Meredith W. Michaels received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts. She has taught at Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and is currently a Lecturer/Research Associate at Smith College.

Robert C. Solomon (1942-2007) was internationally renowned as a teacher and lecturer in philosophy. He was Quincy Lee Centennial Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and over the course of his career taught at numerous institutions, including Princeton University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Auckland, and the University of California, in addition to the University of Texas. For Use in Some Intro to Philosophy Courses

I am a philosophy instructor, and I chose this book last summer in my first intro to philosophy course.

The selections are very short and ecclectic. To object to the book on this basis is rather disingenuous because one should know that about this book prior to selecting it. That is one of the main selling points of the book for others.

This book really worked for me and my students because I wanted to give them short tastes from a broad spectrum of philosophical topics and authors. Since philosophy includes such a diversity of topics, writing styles, and time periods, and because philosophy is not so much about reading the one true theory as about discussing many contrasting viewpoints, and because you never know what kind of philosophy each student will gravitate towards (some love Nietzsche, while others prefer Socrates), it is a nice thing to be able to expose a class to such a wide array of topics, time periods, and styles from which to begin their philosophical researches.

I required supplemental readings (available online) for those philosphers that we wanted to spend more time on.

If you are looking for a more in-depth approach to each philosopher then this is not your book! But if you want a broad spectrum of fun, short readings (an ADD approach to beginning philosophy), this can be a wonderful and enjoyable first experience of the subject.

This book is used as the primary text in my university's introductory Philosophy course, and I think it's an excellent choice. It includes classic texts written by well-known philosophers and the writings of scientists, novelists, religious figures and many others. The inclusion of philosophical writings from such unlikely sources is a great illustration of how philosophy is woven into all aspects of our lives. Reading this book will help you to realize how many philosophical issues you already deal with in your own life and will also help you to find new ways of thinking about and dealing with them.

Great book that I would recommend to anyone

I started with "speak English like American". I studied and felt a lot of fun, together with my daughter, who came to USA when she was a few months old. So the readers need not have to be ESL students. It is a great book that I recommend to any of my friends.

This book, does not have a simple story that is so fun ( Amy's books and stories have been in our daily life between my daughter and I!)

However, it is also very useful. I like the cartoons that help me to understand and memorize the phrases. I also like the part of "origin" and hope she adds this for each word/phrase/idiom in her books.

Some words belong to different classes. I hope Amy can also mark it in the future. Of course, even for same class, people use different words based on different background as well as where they were born, where they grew up. some use those words a lot. It sounds like they just talk exactly what Amy has shown us!

As a Chinese, there are so many differences between my native language and American English. However, I try to find something mutual. I do find some. See, "Look at something from a different angle", "get something off my chest", "think out side of the box". When I finally found a similar Chinese word/phrase to match these words, I feel excited at it.

I am looking forward to seeing more of her books. And thanks for Amazon, such a great place, so that I can know her new book comes out. I ask our local library to buy the new book and I can first read it.

There are not that many books like this that help you understand and teach you how to use idioms properly. I've learned many useful expressions that I now use on a daily basis. It's fun!!
