Great collection of environmental studies articles

One of the difficulties of the field we call "environmental studies" is that seemingly everything and anything is included within its scope. What aspect of humanities, social science, biology, chemistry, engineering, economics, et cetera, is NOT affected by and influencing the environment?

This book, useful as a text in an introductory environmental studies course, makes this point very clear. The authors state in their introductory comments, "Environmental Studies establishes knowledge of special natural phenomena and specific human institutional beliefs and practices. It then mediates between them. Environmental Studies characterizes complex natural conditions on Earth and describes the interface of human with non-human activity" (p. 2).

In additional, "A working description of Environmental Studies thus involves several levels. First, Environmental Studies pursues and draws upon individual disciplines to understand the constituent elements of larger problems and solutions. Then, to grasp and define such problems and issues, Environmental Studies combines the results of an appropriate set of these disciplines and may even foster new ones. Finally, in practical terms, Environmental Studies brings together relevant disciplines and concepts to address environmental issues and to resolve [or attempt to resolve] environmental problems" (p. 3).

What are these environmental problems, and potential solutions?

All of the many readings are rather short (2-3 pages). Sometimes, this is because the article itself was short. Other times, the editors have whittled the article to its fundamentals. still in the original author's own words, but edited for brevity.

- war and peace

- wilderness

The topics above are also coordinated with the 10 general topics, so the reader can "see" the interdisciplinary nature of problem definitions and solutions.

From the biblical chapter of Genesis, to Silent Spring, to Chief Seattle's speech, and all the way to the environmental root and consequences of war, this volume has material of interest to all.

Very readable, interesting, well-organized, and highly recommended.

A Great Read & Excellent Resource

This book is a compilation of highly readable selections about humans and the natural world. It includes excerpts from the best classic and current writings in the field. I had feared it would be too technical, but it has quickly become one of my favorite reads and reference sources.

I'm a resource manager and also teach a survey course in environmental science. It's impossible to be an expert in environmental science, because the world we live in is far beyond our comprehension. As I tell students, studying the environment should be humbling. We earthlings know just enough about the earth to be dangerous, until we learn to manage ourselves and our societies.

This volume brings human and technical perspectives on the environment together, from the perpectives of history, anthropology, forestry, agriculture, engineering, theology, biology, medicine and other disciplines. Enjoy!

Environmental Book that Makes Sense to All Parties

Environment: An Interdisciplinary Anthology is an excellent overview of all sides of the conversation about the environment today and in America's past. Its relatively short, very, very readable collection of essays gives readers a history of the issues, how the U.S. came to the place we are today with environmental groups opposing "working" groups and industry that must use the earth's resources to grow their industry and the economy. Common sense, poetry, humanity, economic insight, philosophy, realism, and idealism --all these and more characterize this book's balanced approach to readings about the environment.
Moreover, the editors' preface explains the 3 sections of the book and ways to read the 10 Case Studies with Interconnections and Discipline-specific readings. Don't try to read the book cover-to-cover. Follow their suggestions. My students in a Green Writing college course really like this book. It is so accessible to all kinds of readers and thinkers.

Play a Game from Gamestorming

We're hardwired to play games. We play them for fun. We play them in our social interactions. We play them at work. That last one is tricky. "Games" and "work" don't seem like a natural pairing. Their coupling in the workplace either implies goofing off (the fun variant) or office politics (the not-so-fun type).

The authors of Gamestorming, have a different perspective. They contend that an embrace and understanding of game mechanics can yield benefits in many work environments, particularly those where old hierarchical models are no longer applicable, like the creatively driven knowledge work of today’s cutting edge industries.

The ELEVATOR PITCH Game

OBJECTIVE OF PLAY: What has been a time-proven exercise in product development applies equally well in developing any new idea: writing the elevator pitch. When developing and communicating a vision for something, whether it’s a new service, a company-wide initiative, or just a good idea that merits spreading, a group will benefit from going through the exercise of writing their elevator pitch.

Often this is the hardest thing to do in developing a new idea. An elevator pitch must be short enough to deliver in a fictional elevator ride but also contain a compelling description of the problem you’re solving, who you’ll solve it for, and one key benefit that distinguishes it from other ideas.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS: Can be done individually, or with a small working group

DURATION OF PLAY: Save at least 90 minutes for the entire exercise, and consider a short break after the initial idea generation is complete before prioritizing and shaping the pitch itself. Small working groups will have an easier time coming to a final pitch; in some cases it may be necessary to assign one person with follow-up accountability for the final wording after the large decisions have been made in the exercise.

HOW TO PLAY: Going through the exercise involves both a generating and a formative phase. To set up the generating phase, write these headers in sequence on flip charts:

• Who is the target customer?
• What is the customer need?
• What is the product name?
• What is its market category?
• What is its key benefit?
• Who or what is the competition?
• What is the product’s unique differentiator?

These will become the elements of the elevator pitch. They are in a sequence that adheres to the following formula.

To finish the setup, explain the elements and their connection to each other:

• The target customer and customer need are deceptively simple: any relatively good idea or product will likely have many potential customers and address a greater number of needs. In the generative phase, all of these are welcome ideas.
• It is helpful to fix the product name in advance--this will help contain the scope of the conversation and focus the participants on “what” the pitch is about. It is not outside the realm of possibility, however, that useful ideas will be generated in the course of the exercise that relate to the product name, so it may be left open to interpretation.
• The market category should be an easily understood description of the type of idea or product. It may sound like “employee portal” or “training program” or “peer-to-peer community.” The category gives an important frame of reference for the target customer, from which they will base comparisons and perceive value.
• The key benefit will be one of the hardest areas for the group to shape in the final pitch. This is the single most compelling reason a target customer would buy into the idea. In an elevator pitch, there is no time to confuse the matter with multiple benefits--there can be only one memorable reason “why to buy.” However, in the generative phase, all ideas are welcome.
• The competition and unique differentiator put the final punctuation on the pitch. Who or what will the target customer compare this idea to, and what’s unique about this idea? In some cases, the competition may literally be another firm or product. In other cases, it may be “the existing training program” or “the last time we tried a big change initiative.” The unique differentiator should be just that: unique to this idea or approach, in a way that distinguishes it in comparison to the competition.

The Generating Phase
Once the elements are understood, participants brainstorm ideas on sticky notes that fit under each header. At first, they should generate freely, without discussion or analysis, any ideas that fit into any of the categories. Using the Post-Up technique, participants put their notes onto the flip charts and share their ideas.

Next, the group may discuss areas where they have the most trouble on their current pitch. Do we know enough about the competition to claim a unique differentiator? Do we agree on a target customer? Is our market category defined, or are we trying to define something new? Where do we need to focus?

Before stepping into the formative phase, the group may use dot voting, affinity mapping, or another method to prioritize and cull their ideas in each category.

The Formative Phase
Following a discussion and reflection on the possible elements of a pitch, the group then has the task of “trying out” some possibilities. This may be done by breaking into small groups, as pairs, or as individuals, depending on the size of the larger group. Each group is given the task of writing an elevator pitch, based on the ideas on the flip charts.

After a set amount of time (15 minutes may be sufficient), the groups reconvene and present their draft versions of the pitch. The group may choose to role-play as a target customer while listening to the pitch, and comment or ask questions of the presenters.

The exercise is complete when there is a strong direction among the group on what the pitch should and should not contain. One potential outcome is the crafting of distinct pitches for different target customers; you may direct the group to focus on this during the formative stage.

STRATEGY
Don’t aim for final wording with a large group. It’s an achievement if you can get to that level of completion, but it’s not critical and can be shaped after the exercise. What is important is that the group decides what is and is not a part of the pitch.

Role play is the fastest way to test a pitch. Assuming the role of a customer (or getting some real customers to participate in the exercise) will help filter out the jargon and empty terms that may interfere with a clear pitch. If the pitch is truly believable and compelling, participants should have no problem making it real with customers.

The elevator pitch, or elevator speech, is a traditional staple of the venture capital community, based on the idea that if you are pitching a business idea it should be simple enough to convey on a short elevator ride.

Game On

The authors deserve credit for pulling the content of this book together and organizing it in a way that is inviting and intuitive to read and browse. It's all about using games to help groups of people think about and address business challenges in creative ways. Although it has 8 chapters, Gamestorming really divides into two major sections: (1) an introductory set of chapters that define what games are, their key characteristics and skills for effective play and (2) an expansive collection of about 90 games, each with rules and strategy explained in one to three pages of text. The book concludes with a short example of how to put games to practical use.

PROS: Gamestorming is an engaging, one-of-a-kind resource for using games in business settings. The introduction and early chapters are well geared to those without much gaming background and do a good job explaining how games can be used to help groups define problems, clarify thinking, generate ideas and ID next steps. There is even a small section with simple drawing tips for illustrating ideas...a nice addition. The diverse selection of games, which appropriately fills more than three-quarters of the book, is applicable to a range of situations. Think of it like a collection of "recipes" for games, which good facilitators can follow exactly or adapt to their own needs. Purely as an idea book for business games, it would rate at least a "4" but there are a few things that make it less useful than it probably could be for some audiences.

CONS: The book is ambitiously written for "the novice and the experienced practitioner alike," but appealing to everyone can be tough. Novice facilitators will like the intro but may find the later sections somewhat lite on game strategy. It's just hard in a few paragraphs to fully explain each game's flow or give newcomers much in the way of tips or trouble shooting to make a confident go of it. A beefed-up focus on "how to" might have been better for this group (those looking for a primer on facilitation may want to check out Kaner's "Facilitator's Guide to Participatory Decision-Making"). By contrast, seasoned facilitators might want more nuance in other areas, like how to organize the rich info games generate for later use, so it isn't reduced to a bunch of meaningless sound bites -- a challenge with any brainstorming session. Finally, to round out its practical application, a few more examples or links showing how games can be used to solve real-life problems would help (see Daniel Hoang's Amazon review of Gamestorming, for several good online links).

A play book for work and life

For several weeks, I've been combing my bookshelves for activities to incorporate into my LIM College class on social media marketing. I wanted games to drive home the information in unconventional, interactive ways. I went to my theatre books, my business books, and my books filled with writing exercises. Nothing seemed quite right. And then I found Gamestorming. It felt like a gift out of the sky. My anxiety about the class diminished a bit more with every page.

Gamestorming details games that engage groups, both large and small, in learning and discovery. They work in corporations and in schools, and I'd like to add that they are a valuable tool for navigating just about any decision and complication in life. I found myself noting in nearly every margin how to use each game. The clear, concise description, depictions, and plan for each took a great deal of thought and care from the authors.

The metaphor of life as a game is well worked over. The trouble with the game of life is that there are no rules. You don't make them and neither does anyone else. They change from moment to moment, and the rule that seemed to work today may never be useful again. We are forced in every situation to think on our feet. Gamestorming gives us more confidence and empowers us to take our futures in our own hands.

Building a Shared Language of Effective Meeting Strategies (and more)

In their book, Dave Gray, Sunni Brown, and James Macanufo have researched and codified a number of strategies to help people generate new ideas, work through them, and act on them. But in making this book, the authors have done more than create a valuable reference of approaches for idea generation and decision-making: they've also begun to create a shared language that we can all make use of.

Rather than going into the games cold, they begin by placing them in the context of a larger framework, allowing the reader to better understand how each game could best suit their situations and mix and match with each other.

Those who've read Gang of Four patterns in the programming world, have dabbled with various design pattern libraries, or are familiar with other collections taking the approach of Christopher Alexander's "A Pattern Language" may find the format recognizable. As they never mention a pattern approach, I'm not sure if the authors intended it that way, but the book is structured in a very similar fashion: naming each game, explaining the basic layout of how it works, and when to apply it.

As with the other pattern-related books, the authors do not claim to know it all, and in fact expect others to discover more patterns -- in this case, the games -- and for the ones they mention to be refined over time. Also similar to the pattern-based approaches, they encourage the reader to use the ones they feel will best fit together for what they need to accomplish, rather than use them in very prescriptive ways.

In naming each game and using a pattern-like structure to explain them, it not only makes it easy to read each individual game, but also helps codify them -- packaging them up into a shorthand that people came refer to and apply quickly with shared understanding.

The authors mention using the games in 'knowledge work' situations, but I feel that it is really applicable to any industry. The things that they are really talking about address real LEADERSHIP, rather than industrial-age, control-focused management approaches that apply less and less to even manufacturing industries today. (I find a lot of ideas in the book reflecting the organizational learning approaches advocated by Senge and Mintzberg.)

You'll find the likely-used-too-often SWOT method in this book, and probably many more that you're already familiar with. But like me, I bet you'll read a few more that you'll be thinking about applying in a future meeting, project, or even when you're stuck for ideas working on your own.

What a great idea......

Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

A behavior strategy that's fun to create and easy to use!

The Power Card Strategy has become one of the most effective strategies we use in our school. It is intrinsically motivating to students because it incorporates a student's special interest or favorite character into a story that helps them understand appropriate behaviors. The Power Card story is fun to develop because the student's favorite TV personality, cartoon character or real life hero explains the importance of using the appropriate behavior and explains how to display this behavior by following the listed steps. This resource has many examples of the Power Card Strategy and walks you through writing your own Power Card story and Power Card. It is an excellent resource for teachers, parents and other professionals who are involved in shaping children's behaviors.

Guide to Teaching Strings, Sixth Edition

This is a very informative book on everything one needs to know about teaching the string instruments, i.e., in this case, violin, viola, cello, and bass. Susan has added extra information to the older edition by her father, Norman Lamb, especially on the current technological development. The explanation of the technical terms is in just right amount that it doen't get too dry and detailed. I especially find that the chapter of "Selecting Instruments, Bows, and Cases" be most useful for inexperienced string teachers. The book is not designed to really teach one to play an instrument, but rather one to provide information on teaching the string instruments. One word of caution to buyers: the printing of pictures in some recent books has bad quality as if they were photo copied directed from a machine. I hope the pulisher would correct that.

Important book

This is an important book if you're interested in coarticulation, and if you are, you should definitely have it. Great chapters on a variety of topics, some of which present data, some of which talk about theoretical implications of data, and some of which talk about instrumental techniques for data-gathering.

Because this is a collection of papers by different authors, quality and style vary from chapter to chapter, but there are few wasted words, and hardly a sentence without a kernel idea worth taking the time to understand. Chapter 1, entitled "The origin of coarticulation", discusses what causes coarticulation, a history of the investigation of coarticulation, and how coarticulation develops in children��s speech. A series of coarticulatory models is reviewed, including Lindblom's 'target undershoot' model of the 1960s (p. 16), Oehman's observation that two vowels interact with each other across intervening stops (p. 17), Wickelgren's idea that we store not phonemes in our brains but collections of context-sensitive allophones (p. 18), up to Keating's 'window' model of the 1980s (p. 21), in which every feature of a segment is associated with a range of values rather than an absolute target.
Part II is entitled "Research results: components of the motor system for speech". Each chapter features a key articulatory organ or organ complex: the velopharyngeal complex, the tongue, the larynx, the lips, and the lips and jaws.
Part III provides a home, under the catch-all classification of "Wider perspectives", for two chapters that did not quite fit elsewhere, "Cross-language studies on articulation" and "Implications for phonological theory".
The chapters of part IV, "Instrumental Techniques", report on the state of the art of various specialized methods and instruments for performing articulatory and acoustic measurements. The methods presented are: palatography, X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, electromagnetic articulography (EMMA), electromyography, transducers for investigating velopharyngeal function (including aerometry, electromyography, various acoustic methods, radiography, endoscopy, photodetection, various mechanical devices, ultrasound, MRI, and EMMA), and techniques for investigating laryngeal articulation (including fibreoptic endoscopy, transillumination, electromyography, pulse-echo ultrasound, acoustic analysis with inverse filtering, glottography, and the Sondhi tube).
The final chapter of the book addresses use of the spectrograph and other acoustic tools in studying coarticulatory phenomena. This chapter gives examples of how to do acoustic analysis of formant transitions, the stable portion of a vowel, stop release, fricative noise, nasals, liquids and glides, voicing and tone, and duration and intensity. This is a laudable beginning, but there is room for much more to be done in this area.
While this book is overall very tight in structure and rich in content, it is not by any means the do-all, end-all work on coarticulation. There are a number of areas not covered in this book that I would like to have seen, and hope to see in future works, such as: what really happens between *words* in running discourse?
This book is a good beginning of more serious and concentrated work on coarticulatory phenomena than has previously been seen. Hopefully many more such studies will follow.

How Important Is The Gift Of Life...The Second Time?

On August 13, 2008, I spent a good part of my day on life support, skilled surgeons giving me a new lease on life,
as new arteries were attached to my heart.

It was my conscious decision to lead a fast food lifestyle, replete with high fat, carbohydrates, foods that made my body acidic. Open Heart Surgery was the consequence. About the Author

James V. Reyes-Picknell is founder and president of Conscious Asset, a Canadian-based consulting and training firm specializing in asset management. James is a licensed professional engineer (Ontario, Canada), certified management consultant (international), certified maintenance and reliability professional (United States), certified RCM2 practitioner, member of the Institute of Asset Management, member of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC), and honors graduate of the University of Toronto with a degree in mechanical engineering (1977). He has done postgraduate studies at the Royal Navy Engineering College (United Kingdom), the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and Dalhousie University in Halifax.

James Reyes-Picknell has coauthored or contributed materials to several books and authored three. His articles on maintenance management have been published in numerous trade journals, periodicals, and his online blog. He has taught physical asset management at the University of Toronto’s Professional Development Centre in support of the programs offered by the university’s Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering and taught the first module of PEMAC’s maintenance management professional certification program, where the second edition of Uptime has been a major reference.

The second edition of Uptime is used in several postsecondary institutions as a textbook on maintenance management and by many companies as the model framework for their maintenance management programs.
