Grade 6 Up–The collection of chapters 35-80 of the online graphic novel is a companion to NBC's television series. It offers glimpses into the lives of Ando, Adam Monroe, and the Haitian, as well as other characters. Familiarity with the characters and plotlines is essential as the chapters jump from one story to another with no introduction. Several authors and illustrators contributed the quick-paced storytelling and full-color artwork, producing a few jarring transitions. Most of the stories are illustrated in the familiar American superhero comic style; a chapter on legendary figure Takezo Kensei is appropriately–and amusingly–presented as manga. Fans of the show will enjoy this gap-filler between seasons, but newcomers will definitely want to check out the previous graphic-novel compilation and perhaps some DVDs.–Beth Gallego, Los Angeles Public Library END

More Stories to flesh out the series

The second hardcover volume of Heroes collects chapters thirty-five through eighty of the online webcomics. While volume one seemed to fill in the blanks between episodes, volume two is a bit different. Rather than filling in the gaps, it provides more side-stories and back-stories to the characters, essentially giving them more depth. Some of it works and some of it doesn't. Those that don't work are primarily because they features some of the lesser characters who fans aren't as strongly connected to.

An example of this is a two-part story of Adam Monroe, the healer and near-immortal who became Hiro's quest in season two. The story takes place in the late 1700's Revolutionary War period as Monroe is working as a mercenary for the English army. While the story isn't bad, it is merely a side-story and has no great bearing on the Heroes world today. As mentioned, there are a few stories like this that don't forward the central plots and themes.

Now, on the other hand, one of the best stories is the four-part "It Takes a Village". This relates the origin and early life of The Haitian. Joe Kelly wrote the story taking place in the characters youth. As the son of a voodoo priest, the boys ability accidentally caused his father to lose his powers when his village was attacked by bandits. His father was cast out because he failed his people. The father blamed his son, causing an irreparable rift between them and it would forever shape the Haitian.

Another outstanding story, this time from Christoper Zatta is "Heroism is Found in the Heart". This story probably takes place in season one and is a solo story starring Ando Masahashi. The story takes place before the death of Hiro's father. Ando is back working in Japan and finds out that he can be a hero even without super powers. Well-scripted story that helps flesh out Ando's desire to want to be a hero as well.

There are several tales involving our favorite cheerleader, Claire, the best of which is "Elle's First Assignment". As you might expect, the story involves Elle Bishop whose father finally gives her her first assignment. She has to pretend to be a high school student in order to keep an eye on Claire. Needless to say, babysitting is not the assignment that Elle had in mind.

The book introduces several new characters who will likely never be seen on the TV show and most of them are forgettable except for Betty, the ugly girl in school who is picked on by everyone. Betty has powerful illusionary powers and can use them to make people see whatever she wants and she's about to get some revenge!

There's around a half-dozen artists who worked on the book and the art is uniformly good and consistent throughout. Not quite as good as the first volume, but Heroes volume two is still a joy to read. While not essential to fans, it provides many new layers of development to certain characters.

Good, but could be better

This book has all the graphic novels from the time-frame from when season one ended to when season two would have ended if not for the writer's strike. That's basically all it has in it. There are Isaac Mendez paintings spaced throughout, but no commentaries or extra info or anything beyond the graphic novels. The novels are good and I love having them in a hardback form, but I was hoping to be rewarded with something extra.

HEROES Side Stories and Character Development

As a fan of the tv show HEROES who actually doesn't spend much time online visiting the HEROES website, I'm glad that the online comics have been collected together in graphic novel form. HEROES: VOLUME TWO features chapters 35-80 of the online webcomics. Most of these mini-comics provide side-stories or give some character development that hasn't always happened on the show itself, especially with secondary characters. Hiro, Ando, Claire Bennett, and Noah Bennett are involved in several stories as well as The Haitian and Elle Bishop. There's also a few stories involving characters who have appeared in only a few episodes of the series, such as Betty, Molly (who was featured prominently in the first two seasons, but not anymore), and the teenager who Claire fell in love with who could fly. There's also several random stories including one that features Ben Franklin. The overall quality of art is very good throughout the book, even though several different artists worked on these mini-webcomics. The book isn't quite as good as HEROES: VOLUME ONE, but it still should provide enjoyment to those who are fans of HEROES.

About the Author
George C. Edwards III is University Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University and the Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies. He is also a Distinguished Fellow at the University of Oxford. When he determined that he was unlikely to become shortstop for the New York Yankees, he turned to political science. Today, he is one of the country’s leading scholars of the presidency and has written or edited 26 books on American politics.

Martin P. Wattenberg teaches courses on American politics at the University of California, Irvine. His first regular paying job was with the Washington Redskins, from which he moved on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Is Voting for Young People?, which examines the role of young people in elections today. His research also encompasses how elections in the United States compare to those in other established democracies.

I recommend purchasing through pearson where its only $70 for full access to book and online course which many classes use. Pearsons version of the ebook is hands down the better choice

The text is so badly formatted for the phone as to be totally useless. When I got home

If it were possible for me to give zero stars I would. Do not, under any circumstances, buy this book in the Kindle edition. Or at least, do not buy it if you want to be able to read it on more than one device.

I tried to download it to my laptop, but that didn't work, so I put it on my phone so that I could finish an assignment. The text is so badly formatted for the phone as to be totally useless. When I got home, I tried to put it on my desktop. Kindle tells me that I have exceeded the number of devices I can have it on, and that in order to put it on my computer, I have to deregister my phone, and delete all the content on my phone. Nowhere does it say that there is a limit to the number of devices on the purchase page. And if it had, I would have made a different choice about what I would have purchased.

KINDLE sucks

Do not buy the Kindle version, waste of money, I can not use it on my devices. I can't use it on the chromebook, I can't use on my laptop, keeps saying that it is not comparable with Windows 8, I have Windows 10 on the laptop but anyhow. So, the only device I can use it on is my cell phone. Thanks a lot amazon. Waste of $40, I regret not buying the paperback.

The general question Professor Allen addresses is why some countries are rich and others poor. He notes that around 1500 CE there was no marked difference among most economies, and divergence only began when long distance commerce was enabled by the advent of full rigged sailing ships. He identifies this as the birth of globalization. The gains from this long distance trade were not enjoyed uniformly, thus beginning the "great divergence".

Both England and the Netherlands profited by this globalization, and had pulled away from the rest of the world by the 17th century. England became the home of the Industrial Revolution. This period, say 1760 to 1850, was replete with innovations in many areas, including the first steam engine.

The steam engine was the first practical demonstration that heat could be turned into power. He does a good job of describing it's early evolution and its initial impact, but he doesn't explicitly note its crucial role in opening the technical door to the much more widespread exploitation of the power contained in high energy fuels like coal and oil and, much later, nuclear fission. Escaping the power limitations inherent in animal muscle put the west on an entirely new trajectory of economic growth.

The last two-thirds of book presents a description of the economic development of many individual areas of the world and their economic interactions. In addition to GDP/head, his yardstick of comparison is often the relative wages of workers. The Economists magazine's Big Mac Index was not available in those early days to normalize currency differences, so he constructed his own: he estimated the bare subsistence wage for each country, and then compared countries in terms of wages as a factor of bare subsistence.

He describes the standard model of development: the integration of internal markets through the improvement of transportation and the elimination of internal tariffs, the protection of infant industries through tariffs, banks to produce stable financing, and mass education to upgrade the labor force. He describes its application to Russia before WWI, where it failed, and to Japan where it ultimately succeeded. In the 19th century, with singular boldness, the Japanese completely rejected the ancient cultures and practices, introduced and emphasized mass education, and began the adoption of western technology modified to their needs. In the early 20th century, full implementation of the standard model transformed them into a modern nation. A still different story was told for the USSR and for China.

Data is presented that clearly shows how GDP per worker rises dramatically with capital invested per worker throughout the world. He argues that low wage countries have remained poor because there is little incentive to substitute capital for cheap labor. This is one of Africa's many problems, still suffering from its colonial legacy.

I have one criticism: I would have appreciated more discussion of the differences stemming from different political-economic practices, such as state planning versus free-market capitalism. Issues such as the sanctity of private property and the relative economic freedom accorded individuals as it affects the level of innovation and entrepreneurship. Such factors are briefly mentioned early on, but essentially dismissed.

Overall, it is an impressive work. The data he has amassed is comprehensive, and his descriptions are truly enlightening. It is not a casual read; he is economical with words and conveys a lot of information in a short book. I regret that it was not published soon enough to be a resource for me in writing my own book, The Evolution of Riches: An Economic History of Innovation and Capitalism, the Role of Government, and the Hazards of Democracy.
