Great Textbook!

The 8th edition of this Biology book is great. It has many pictures, diagrams, and charts that make the reading much easier. Also, it has end of section reviews that help to absorb the material.

If you are required to purchase the 9th edition- don't bother. When comparing this version to a classmate's, I noticed that the text and charts were essentially the exact same. The 9th edition has nearly the exact same content, except some diagrams may have different colors or be located on different places on the page. So, if you already have the 8th edition or can find it somewhere for a lower price than the 9th, there is no need for the 9th edition.

Excellent Biology book for any experience level!

I purchased this book about 3/4 weeks ago and I am very happy with it.

I am actually not a student - I'm in my mid 20's and work full-time with a house, wife, dog etc. However, I do have a passion for a wildlife and natural history and decided to buy this book so that I could casually learn more about the living creatures of our world and how they function.

I have no formal background in Biology, yet I have been able to pick up this book and start reading straight away. I have just finished Chapter One (page 25 of 1300!) and still have a very long way to go, but have learnt a lot already.

This may not be for the younger crowd (under 15yrs), as there is SOME terminology in here that youngsters may not quite understand. But for students and casual learners alike that simply want to learn about Biology, this is an excellent book. It has everything in here you could ever need. The graphs, pictures and diagrams are also very clear and concise.

This book is so jam-packed with information that I had two professors use it for completely separate biology classes. Well written and organized which is really nice when it comes time to take notes and study for tests.

An admirable treatment of the subject

This book is part of a useful series of, at present, sixteen attractively produced volumes published by the J. Paul Getty Museum, with other titles like "Music in Art", "Gardens in Art" etc. The title of this volume is slightly misleading: a more accurate title would have been "Illness and Medicine in Art", for many illustrations deal with diseases and disabilities without any reference to medical treatment (and a small number seem to me to have no connection with either, e.g. The Fall of Icarus). However, there are plenty of images about treatment, from medieval times to the present, and a good many of them are by artists who are not at all well-known. The text with the images refers to the illness and the treatment, about which we can learn a lot, and also often to the technical means used by an artist to highlight certain parts of the picture. The images are small, but clear, and the colour is excellent. The print is necessarily very small and will be a strain on some eyes.

A picture is worth a thousand words

This very interesting book uses works of art to illustrate themes in medicine such as disease, suffering and the physician. It is useful for thinking about or teaching humanities and medicine, narrative medicine and the history of medicine. I have used it as a source book for teaching medical students and residents and find that it encourages discussion by offering vivid examples of what can be abstract concepts.

deceptive title

Only the best known and studied paintings are thoroughly analyzed. Many repetitive examples of small things. I was dissapointed by not finding more examples of different ilnesses that we know there should be thousands of examples in paintings and sculptures all over the world. the medicine and science are neglected in the explanations.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR\

Ann Cecil-Sterman, MS, L.Ac, is the author of the internationally acclaimed book, Advanced Acupuncture: A Clinic Manual, a required text in many acupuncture schools in the United States and widely read in Europe and Australia. She travels all over the world to teach the application and methodology of the Complement Channels, the art of pulse diagnosis, and the use of food as medicine. For many years she taught Advanced Clinical Observation and was a senior clinic supervisor at the school of acupuncture founded by Dr Jeffrey Yuen in 1997 in New York City.  She is a long-time student of Dr Yuen, having extensively studied acupuncture, diet, Chinese medical history, herbs, qigong, essential oils, stones and philosophy with him across North America. Ann was Director of the Classical Wellness Center in Manhattan where for many years she practiced and taught classes on advanced diagnosis and the theory and application of Classical Chinese Medicine. This is the book we might have wished we had in school except back then there would never have been any time to digest it all. Cecil-Sterman starts with a review of the Classical Approach of feeling levels of the pulse, moves on to present in a new light the 28+ TCM pulses we mindlessly memorized for our national exams, and then opens up the whole world of Directional Pulses and Organ Communication that nicely complements the new interest in the Eight Extra Meridians and Divergent Channels as demonstrated by the recent flurry of books on these Classical Acupuncture protocols. This is the pulse-taking book we now have the time to explore. And it is time well spent. “The Art of Pulse Diagnosis" is a book to reflect on between patients and to be savored in small chunks. And best of all Cecil-Sterman has a writing style that flows smoothly from thought to thought.

valuable and beautifully written book from cover to cover

If I could give this book 100 stars, I definitely would! A few moments ago, I finished reading this thorough, informative, thoughtful, valuable and beautifully written book from cover to cover. I imagine I will be digesting it for years to come. This book is a true gift that Cecil-Sterman has given to us as practitioners and laymen about the wisdom found within the pulses. The paintings she shares with us give life and feeling to the pulses that words can't solely describe. In my practice, As a TCM trained practitioner, I have found that the diagnostics found in this book have been making my classical treatments that much more effective. The directional pulse taking in itself is crucial knowledge that all practitioners should know. Ann describes directional pulse taking in depth here, along with shedding light on the basic 28 pulses acupuncturists learn in school. Each day I am in practice I apply little bits and pieces of the knowledge I have gained from her book and I imagine this book will continue to be indispensable in my practice. A must must must buy for any acupuncturist to deepen your knowledge of pulse taking! So important.

May's study of violence is even more apropos today

POWER AND INNOCENCE is even more pertinent to today's violent society than it was when first published in 1972--during the Vietnam war. Subtitled A SEARCH FOR THE SOURCES OF VIOLENCE, May elaborates really on his introduction to readers in LOVE AND WILL of his conception of "the daimonic," pointing out how power--though corruptive when absolute or totally absent--can, like anger or rage, also be a positive, constructive force. He also warns of the dangers of "pseudoinnocence": an immature, naive inability or (often religious) unwillingness to recognize the reality of evil in the world, oneself or others. Such denial of the daimonic is the antithesis of true spirituality. Though the war is long over, we Americans are currently engaged in hostilities of a different kind: domestic violence, schoolyard massacres, bombings and general mayhem. We are as violent as ever--maybe more so--and May's superb and prescient book is as aprop! os as ever--maybe even more so.

The Causes of Violence

I found this book very instructive, full of insight into the underlying causes of violence of all kinds. I wish I had known about this earlier in my life. May makes the argument that every human being requires significance and if a system obstructs that for too long, violence will inevitably erupt like the sudden emergence of boiling in a pot of water that has been heated for some time. He describes some ideas that are difficult to face, such as that America has always been a land of violence, from the initial genocide of the Indians, through the 1968 political assassinations, to the present day occupations of other people's countries. Another is that the violence in war is sometimes described by soldiers as accompanying deep experiences they miss after their combat experience is over. I highly recommend this book for both its substance and its readability.

Read This to Undestand Politics Today

This was written in 1972 in response to the violence surrounding the Vietnam War and Civil Rights , at a time when the Left had more of the violent imagery wrapped in false "flower child" innocence and flirted with violent actions (failed bombings) but the right still used police guns (Kent State)and the horrifying Attica Prison mass murder.

But, for me, this book is most relevant to my understanding of politics today. Reading this I can see how that period from the late '50s with the landmark desegregation ruling of "Brown vs Board of Education" continues right up to today with a Black man in the White house, NOT as a mere overly simplistic black-white issue, but as the deep social-economic issues of today and the questions "how we see ourselves", "how we fit in", "how we feel safe" "what is my place in society". He never gets bogged down in the swamp of "us-vs-them" thinking. He doesn't try to play one side off the other. His sense of his own humanity is much broader and more generous than that.

This book faces issues of violence as an issue of power that is blocked and denied. Power itself is neither good nor bad. It is simply "the will to BE". The issue becomes a question of how power can be expressed without violence? By separating power from its violent expression and by allowing that the expression of power can be an assertion of creativity and a co-creative sense of humanity, Rollo May is doing all of us a great service. I have worked with the prison-based Alternatives to Violence Project for over 20 years, but I have never encountered such a deep and generous understanding of power , violence and innocence as within the pages of this book!

In this book May expresses , with great humanity and very little soap-box grand-standing, everything I have been discovering about myself and my thoughts on my relation to society in the past 10 years ... some things about myself right up to this very moment, in the week or day before I read a certain chapter or sentence. Though I am not gong through a difficult divorce, I found his writing VERY helpful to share with a friend who is struggling with helping her grown daughter go through her own emotionally violent feelings provoked by her perception of being "powerless".

Rollo May does not express himself as a polemicist. He does not use difficult "scientific" language. Though a psychotherapist, he keeps psychological jargon to a minimum. Whatever theories he proposes are subsumed by the great care for humanity that his writing expresses. Though you may cringe at the politics of today, you will be comforted just sitting in the company of this great-hearted, compassionate, insightful and very, very intelligent man.
