Must have for your library

Nancy Lee's new target volume delineation is a resource that all residents and perhaps all radiation oncologists should have at their disposal. This book is an expansion of the previous edition with extensive updates:

Contouring atlases for ALL body sites, chapters by various authors
Examples for multiple stages of disease
Text explaining contouring and rationale
Tables of CTV and PTV expansion definitions
Tables of dosimetric constraints for each site

The textbook contains instructions for planning based on atlases, protocols, institutional experience, and expert opinion. Multiple examples with different stages are provided. The expert opinion sections are shown for cases such as extensive disease or cranial nerve invasion for head and neck. Quite a bit of resources are quoted and references are included for recommended reading. A strength of the text lies in that it is not over-confident or religious: it is stated in many sections that variations are acceptable. For example, Nancy Lee's head and neck chapters are very courteous in that she provides her choice doses but also goes on to outline other methods of doing things. Advanced techniques such as hypofractionation and SIB are outlined for various body sites.

There are a few areas that the text could improve:

Some images are too small or poor quality and their contours are difficult to see. Looks like someone's spell check didn't get to the images - they can have the occasional typo.

The prostate chapter could use improvement. The author is from MSKCC and outlines only their method, one that few institutions use. Standard dosing and some SIB suggestions for pelvis and node positive would have been nice to see.

Nodes in the gastric cancer section are confusing the way they are labeled

In a few instances what is done in a picture differs slightly from what is described in the text. This also serves however to show that variations in practice are acceptable.

The breast chapter could use some more detailed explanations on how to go about contouring the breast and nodes, as these descriptions differ slightly in different atlases. The breast chapter could also use some more text on planning and some more details on breast reconstruction inflated vs deflated. The breast chapter has some helpful IMRT technique descriptions.

Others have mentioned there are some problems with the index. I have never used the index. The table of contents is labeled well enough for me.

An index of dosimetric constraints would be a nice addition in future editions

The downsides to the text make this book 4.5 stars at the worst, which still rounds up to 5 stars.

All in all, this is an excellent text I believe all should have.

Against Her Will

A good story. A kidnapped, and bound married couple are held at the mercy of sexual predator. The predator ignores her pleas to let them go and begins to engage the beautiful wife in having sex with this fiend. Slowly the kidnaper breaks her down by arousing her. Her non consent begins to wain and her husband does not want to admit that she is beginning to enjoy the length and girth of this sexual pleasure. The wife has never known such pleasure.
A good read ...get it.

So hot it melted my monitor!

“Against Her Will” by Matthew Lee

This story wasn’t just hot -- it seared, it scorched, it sizzled. As disturbing to read as it was arousing (perhaps disturbing specifically because it was so arousing). Thank goodness I never fell under the tutelage of a Jacob in real life; don’t think I’d want to learn whatever dark lessons he might teach me about myself. Some knowledge we keep locked far from consciousness for a reason. Adam and Eve would have been banished from Eden once they tasted that apple if for no other reason than because their innocence would be utterly shattered after delving too deep within their own psyches. That long-lost Paradise can only be inhabited by the innocent, not those who’ve been forced to confront real self-knowledge. But “Against Her Will” (and his will too, if we include her husband) was a work of fiction, which makes it a safer way for us to explore the deeper reaches of ourselves. And what a powerful, compelling, erotic story it was to read. Wow! Cold showers for me for the rest of the week.

My only caveat is that, as with most work published on the internet, this would have benefited from closer scrutiny before it was released. The errors in copy editing and proofreading were relatively minor, but they still sometimes jolted me out of the story as I tried to make sense of the occasional incorrect pronoun, missing word or similar mistake. But as I said, these errors were relatively minor and never enough to keep “Against Her Will” from being a 5-star story. I highly recommend it and will definitely read more of Matthew Lee’s work.

A departure from normal

I liked the non-consensual aspect of this story. A departure from this author's normal style. I hope he does more though. He certainly has a wY with words and makes you almost feel what is going on. The descriptions of characters, feelings, emotions leave the reader wanting more. With every story I read by this author, I almost hate the fact that it ends.

Fast delivery. OK product

I purchased the book and received it very quickly. Saying it was in very good condition is slightly over exaggerated. The pages were in pretty good shape but the cover was not. It is a hard back book that is completely faded and scratched up. There was residue from old tape or stickers on the front of the book that makes everything sticky and stick to it. The title and description also says it comes with infotrac. The cardboard insert was in there but it had already been opened and the code had been used Therefore it was not included as it wont work.

The book itself contains good information though ad really does help with a Metabolism class. I am able to use this older edition because it contains a lot of the same information

Not bad considering, but lacking in many areas

Ok, I bought this book hoping for information that a pharmacist might use if inclined to use mandrake. Is there a correlation I should be aware of for body mass versus amounts of mandrake to achieve non-fatal results. Yes, there is, but it was not in the book.
On the other hand, it did give a very informative description of the effects (quantities omitted) and the history of this magickal herb.

Desires follows the reawakening of Stacie to the joy and pleasure of sex and by association the rebuilding of her self-confidence after a violent marriage. Dan is there to help her through it all. Stacie signs a contract that states that there should never be any emotional attachment with your tutor.

But love doesn't give a hoot about a contract does it?

I couldn't put the book down. I started reading at around 8:00pm and finished at 3:47am. I loved the wit, I loved the angst, I most definitely loved Stacie's internal conflict. It is this internal conflict that made me want to give Stacie a hug and tell her that everything would be okay. The happiness she felt when she realized that things would be alright was palpable that I was cheering for her (except that I couldn't do a rah rah dance at 3:47 in the morning now, could I?)

Although it's Stacie's POV all the way through, Dan's small gestures and the way he'd go out of his way to be the best tutor Stacie had, the way he looked forlorn when she left, made you see that Dan too was falling for Stacie.

Desires is a sexy, funny, sweet, amazing book which many will find enjoyable. I for one will think of a different thing now when I hear the phrase "willy nilly".

Neither will I look at a geeky IT support person in the same way again. Who knows what treasures lie beneath.......

The author failed to develop a story or characters that an audience will love

Weak story with poorly developed characters. I found difficulty enjoying or understanding Stacie. Her characters personality shifted constantly, and I found her character annoying. The sex scenes were very repetitive and lack imagination and emotion. The ending of the book was poorly constructed and lacked meaning.

Non-fiction at its best

Insightful, meticulously researched and beautifully written, The Steal explores shoplifting as a cultural phenomenon -- crime, disease, and protest -- that has always been with us and always will be. No one can stop shoplifting-- not the stores with their increasingly sophisticated anti-theft devices, not the police who arrest shoplifters, and not the psychologists who treat them because we shoplift for reasons that are too deeply embedded in our society to ever go away.The book benefits enormously from not only the author's tireless pursuit of every angle of her subject, but also her deep familiarity with the literature of shoplifting. Yet Mrs. Shteir wears her learning lightly. The Steal is as much fun to read as it is informative.

INTERESTING INSIGHT

As we know, there are professional shoplifters/criminals, and others that act on impulse or needing something beyond their financial means. This is a good one to read by law enforcement folks, and especially store/mall security types. The shoplifters cause us to pay for the losses by the stores, and of course, tie up the police and courts with minor crimes. Good insight. I liked it.

Bright and sparkling

Billing itself as the first genuine study of shoplifting, Rachel Shtier's charming cultural history THE STEAL examines the ways in which stealing merchandise has been around for centuries but has exploded particularly in the United States in the last fifty years. Shtier offers a wealth of enjoyable and intelligent anecdotes that stretch from ancient Greece to the present day involving theft. Did you know, for example, that one of the landmark early court cases of shoplifting in England in the early nineteenth century was committed by Jane Austen's aunt? (The prosecution could not explain adequately why a wealthy woman would stoop to petty thievery, and so she got off, in a pattern that would be replicated for decades in the next two centuries in cases involving "thrill shoplifters"). Shtier's prose is as fizzing and as enjoyable as her sensational topic merits: this is a book that does not position itself as a heavily scholarly study of shoplifting, but rather as an enjoyable cultural history of the crime marketed to a broadly popular audience. As such, the work does not freight itself with either footnotes or heavy sociological analysis, and attempts to cover all kinds of bases, from the history of the crime (which Shtier intriguingly argues mushroomed after the appearance of Abbie Hoffman's incendiary STEAL THIS BOOK in 1971) to its effects on merchandise sales today, and to the extraordinary efforts taken by merchants to create anti-theft devices and shaming techniques to combat theft. I found Shtier's prose, her subject matter, and her wealth of material great fun, and her research impressive; my only problems occurred with the book's sometimes confusing organization. (More specific chapter titles to announce her topics would certainly have helped.) But this is a rich and entertaining read overall.

Dr Michael Ford has worked in Microbiology for over 20 years and has a wide experience in all areas of a diagnostic service. Michael was appointed technical manager for the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2003. His main research area is in bacterial identification, which has

Beyond the Manual

REVIEW: The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook: The go-to-guide for assistant editors learning about Avid and their jobs.

I always find reviewing books about editing, particularly books about the technology we as editors use, difficult. They aren't difficult to read, its just once you've read one book on the technology there isn't anything new that you can learn from reading another book on the same technology.

This is where Kyra Coffie's book The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook: The go-to-guide for assistant editors learning about Avid and their jobs comes in and alters my view. Coffie has found a unique niche, the assistants need for technology knowledge specific to their roles. Many Avid handbooks simply regurgitate the users manual that comes with the software. Coffie, is an experienced assistant editor in Los Angeles and host of the Avid Assistant Editor's blog, a blog that focuses on helping educate the next generation of Assistants, is giving knowledge needed for the assistant to do their job well.

The information contained in her book goes beyond the usual manual and into actual tricks and techniques Assistants need to know. (*AHEM* *Cough* Assistants! Might want to purchase this). Here's an example of her knowledge based on experience.

In Appendix 2: Deck Configuration, Coffie, describes configuring decks with your Avid system. But she goes beyond the manual into the editing room when she breaks down the potential reasons that Avid might not be seeing the deck and how to work around them, a small but time saving element, not referenced in the Avid manual.

Many a time, I've seen young first time assistants wasting time on small issues that Coffie helps the reader prepare for, those pesky last minute problems. It also includes elements that many MANY books ignore, for example preparing for online editing, which she wrote with the help of Josh Petok, an online editor and colorist.

Many schools (Note: Not all but many) these days have become hyper focused on the technology and in particular getting students up and running for their projects. This usually leads to issues such as students not knowing simple things like preparing and exporting for sound or setting up for online. Kyra's book is extremely useful in this instance.

I always want to put my technology through the paces so I felt it was important to do the same with this book. I brought in a former student of mine, Eamonn O'Connell, who I was helping teach Avid to, and had him use this book while cutting a small project for AOTG.com. Eamonn was cutting a small video he and I shot about one of the founders of the Canadian Cinema Editors, Paul Day.

Here's what Eamonn thought:

As a new editor it's hard to come to terms with getting "up to speed" on the latest technology in NLE systems. When one feels moderately comfortable on one system more often than not, especially as a student, there's a change. Floating between Final Cut Pro or X, Adobe Premiere and Avid has challenges.

As a frugal student I constantly assess the need for more books, when most resource material can be found online. I've long operated on the when-I-need-help-I'll-Google-it mentality, allowing me to for-go shelling out several hundred dollars in text fees. That said, I still find my bookshelf playing host to those that I've felt are necessary and better than their virtual counterparts. Between my Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side Collection tomes rest three equally valuable film books. 1) The Filmmaker's Handbook 2) How to Make It In Shorts and 3) The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook.

Let's crack the cover on Kyra Coffie's latest then, shall we?

Like many editing texts before Coffie's, hers starts with the common "Introduction" and "Getting Started" chapters. But that's where familiarity and comparisons can quickly end. Coffie expands and remains focused on the tasks of an Assistant Editor (AE). Nothing more, nothing less - making The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook (AAEH) a Welterweight Champion text; trim and lean, offering a knockout punch in the need to know purview of an AE.

AAEH offers several indexes and tables giving timely direction to the AE who's sweating under the ticking clock. The pages are thick enough to thumb through effectively rather than fumble with, like the flimsy pages of the latest edition of Oxford's Dictionary. Coffie's advice is quick to the point but motherly too - careful to point out hazards like, "confirm" and "make sure" before you move on to the next steps of your work. Coffie then makes you look like you're ready to take on the next feature film as Editor, not "Why is this guy in the union again?"

Coffie adds some flare to a library that's predominantly text heavy - After all we're editors, visual people! Full colour screenshots, cartoons and great examples help to solidify new learning, making sure that you can focus more on making cuts, rather than remembering a page number.

I must say there's something about the tangible quality a good text like Coffie's brings. There's a tactility, and pleasure from highlighting, dog earing and penciling pages that make me feel accomplished even though I'm still just a student. Finally, there's something to be said about keeping that second monitor free from a Google search window and using it more for what it was installed for in the first place - Bins!

As there's a bit of room on my bookshelf still and seeing as how FCPro looks like the Titanic, I can only hope that Coffie will write a similar book for Adobe Premiere. Then like my Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side - my film resource collection will be complete.

If Kyra keeps this up she will be the Avid Guru that Avid needs!

Before I begin this review, a few words about assistant editors -- they are the unsung heroes of post.

In the beginning, before nonlinear, generally assistant editors (except those involved in feature work) wore totally different hats than they do now. They loaded and cleaned tape machines, did layoffs for dupes, made copies of finished tapes, checked specs, slated and laid bars and tone, kept things manageable for editors and worked extremely long hours. But they usually didn't get deep into the editor's domain.

Today, they still work long hours, and still clean up after the editors they work with...but now, in the accelerated atmosphere of nonlinear, fast-turnaround and high-volume editing deadlines, they are our eyes, ears, (sometimes our brains) and our first line of defense. They prescreen, prepare and sometimes save us from ourselves.

In the dark of night, with ranks of producers, executives, changes and deadlines having taken their toll on an editor's health and psyche, the bond with their AE can be forged in blood. I've been there.

A good AE -- a truly good AE -- is hard to find and worth their weight in gold. They can spell the difference between a good edit and a great edit. Not enough can be said...they are my heroes.

Kyra Coffie is obviously one of those rare and extraordinary individuals, she is the AE's AE, and her new book is a painstakingly thorough, researched and exhaustive guide to how to achieve that valued stature of an editor's closest ally.

I have never seen a more detailed explanation of the AE's duties.

A COMPREHENSIVE LOOK

Profusely and intelligently illustrated with explanatory, full-color diagrams, Coffie follows the entire process of editing, going deep into areas not even many seasoned editors have ventured.

Running the gamut from capturing media to exporting, layout and slating to final outputting, with everything in between.

Coffie's methodology is intelligent and comprehensive, sometimes humorous. Having been an AE for over a decade, she knows what problem areas require elaboration, and in her thoughtful explanations throughout she provides a Did I Do This Correctly? section that painstakingly allows the reader to double check their work by asking concise questions (like a pilot's checklist) -- details that some seasoned editors can miss even after decades of experience. Her manner is warm and reassuring, and you feel her experience and knowledge. She doesn't just say how to do things, but why they have to be done that way, firmly guiding you along the way.

Almost everything comprising Media Composer is methodically explained and demoed -- from AMA to ingest to outputting, effects layering, and treating audio and video for export. Even the darker arts of transcoding, consolidating, managing the EDL manager, the dreaded Title Tool and it's style guides are covered. There's little that is not touched. It's all done in a systematic, well-explained and logical manner, wholly designed to make the editor's life easier and the job of show-building more efficient.

Coffie knows the relationship between the AE and their editor, and her vast experience is evident throughout as she explains why things must be done in certain orderly manners.

MAKING SENSE OUT OF CHAOS

As I read through the book, I understood more about why things are done the way they are on the Media Composer. (Many older editors, like myself, came through the ranks from linear to nonlinear without the studied discipline those who started out on nonlinear did. We had to apply old understandings of tape-based to a new world, and a certain lack of organization came along with us.)

Coffie's methodology and conciseness allowed me to make sense of areas not fully understood as she explains why she does what she does.

One note -- if you get this book, (and I wholeheartedly encourage both AE and editor alike to do so), save Coffie's detailed explanation of multigrouping for last. It is intense and detailed (80 pages worth) and could discourage you in its length and thoroughness. Go through the rest of the book first and come back. With a detailed index, concise appendixes outlining useful exercises for skill building and myriad vital checklists, her comprehensiveness is clearly evident.

This is not a mindless instruction manual -- this is a working assistant editor's bible, built from experience and success. It will educate you, it will demystify a daunting subject, and it will allow you to become a valued asset, as important and marketable as the best editor.

WHAT DID I MISS?

If there was anything lacking in this book that I had hoped to find, it was in the all-important subject of how to truly organize a project from start to finish, implement a logical bin structure and methodology. With the massive amounts of material we routinely run into today, the AE's skill at creating a systematically organized, logical and understandable project tree is essential -- breaking down through a clear visual schematic all the material we need: interviews, b-roll, sound, iso's, OTFS, beauty, etc.

To be sure, Coffie's excellent breakdown of multigrouping was extraordinary and concise, and I am sure she organizes projects with the same precision and finesse, but I did miss her tips at how she organizes what we, the editor, must look at every day -- our workspace.

Another area to address (where perhaps she can use her excellent Website and blog: [...]) is setting up ScriptSync sessions -- importing and preparing script, a powerful tool for Media Composer.
Regardless of the bits that are missing, you won't find a better resource for assistant editing on the Media Composer. I just hope I can work with her someday.

A must have book

This is an amazing book, that I wish I had a long time ago. Its great for Editors as well as AE's. I love how Ms Coffie gives a step by step guide through the workflows. Not only does she give you the proper settings for various workflows but she explains their function. This book is extremely thorough. The only thing I wish it had was some examples of bin organizations, but I guess that will vary from post house to post house. For anyone wanting a mastery of MC this book is a must have. There are other great Avid books (Avid Agility) but they don't cover what is covered here. And the material covered here is essential.

Construal presents a new theory of sentence processing, one that allows a limited type of underspecification in the syntactic analysis of sentences. It extends what has arguably been the dominant theory of parsing (the garden-path theory developed by Lyn Frazier and colleagues) through the 1980s into new and previously unexplored domains, and greatly advances the potential for insights into how meaning is both made and understood.

Frazier and Clifton, both pioneers in parsing theory, present new psycholinguistic theory and experimentation concerning how "nonprimary" phrases are analyzed in sentence comprehension. They define a process of "construal" and show how it accounts for cases in which the parser does not fully determine structure during the course of ordinary comprehension.

The idea of construal arises in part through the authors' critical review of the challenges to their established framework for research on structural parsing. While they demonstrate that the principles of parsing theory remain valid for a wide variety of languages and grammatical constructions, they go beyond them to clearly identify those types of constructions built by the process of construal. Frazier and Clifton show that construal follows distinct principles, and they flesh out their hypothesis with previously unexamined evidence and new empirical tests.
