About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh where he qualified as a doctor, but it was his writing which brought him fame, with the creation of Sherlock Holmes, the first scientific detective. This Penguin edition of Conan Doyle's deductive logic contains 8 mysteries-7 of which are serious crimes-solved brilliantly by Victorian London's genius sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. These exploits have been faithfully recorded by his friend and ally, Dr. Watson, who also resides at 221-B Baker Street. Doyle's literary style includes the following elements: ample dialogue, a detailed denouement which fills in all the loose ends, and occasional personal touches. Watson appears at

times as bewildered, disappointed, deductive in his own right,

and truly concerned for Holmes' physical and mental health. Sherlock is presented as a man of personal honor and unflappable integrity, compassionate toward victims while ruthless toward criminals, and in one tale very human-delighting in the praise and recognition from Justice professionals. In addition he rarely extracts a serious fee for his services.

The settings for these 8 mysteries range from six in the country to two in town. Holmes is sought out by clients in four tales, while he actively helps the police in the other four; one

mystery he stumbles into while holiday. Most of these crimes involve cruel murder or bizarre death; two concern precious gems and one delves into English history. This is a must book for every new Sherlock Holmes reader. For anyone out there who has not read any of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, this book introduces the reader to some of the best Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Silver Blaze, The adventure of the Speckled Band, The adventure of the dancing men, The adventure of the Blue Carbuncle are a few of the Holmes mysteries presented in this book. Each of the mysteries presented in this book expose different facets of Holmes and he is in his elements in each of them. That the book is in large print is icing on the cake.

Does not measure up to Stoppard's plays

In reading CONVERSATIONS WITH STOPPARD, I came accross an interview in which Stoppard said that he was more satisfied with his novel, LORD MALQUIST AND MR. MOON, than with any of his plays. Now, I am a Stoppard fanatic and have read most of his plays, and I have no idea what posessed him to make such a statement. LORD MALQUIST AND MR. MOON is a very good book, and I would be impressed were it from almost any other author. For the author of gems like ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, ROUGH CROSSING, and JUMPERS, however, this novel is a bit disappointing. The style is unmistakably Stoppard (don't get me wrong -- this is a must read for any Stoppard devotee), but the plot is a bit muddled, and it is hard to identify with the characters (whereas everyone can identify with the lack of control felt over his own life by Rosencrantz). Overall, a good novel, but not vintage Stoppard

I have to disagree with the other reviewer. I think this book fully measures up to his plays. While reading the novel, I had the sense almost of watching a film. The book is fast-paced, exhilirating, and very funny. The humour is vintage Stoppard, and it reads much like some of the long monologues in Jumpers and Travesties. I think the characters are incredible fascinating and found it very easy to connect w/ Mr. Moon. Overall, a wonderful book and a joyous read. Highly recommended!

A rare, truly inspired novel.

Tom Stoppard's only novel, and one of the best books I've ever read. Mr. Moon, weighed upon by the crushing pressures of modern society (pressures which, it seems, bother no-one else), toys with a home-made bomb as he dutifully records the revised history of sponsor Lord Malquist. Stoppard brings comic genius and keen philosophical insight to bear on the "human condition". Cowboys, Jesus on a donkey, lions, French maids, Oh My.

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Business, University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). At UTD, he founded the Center for Global Business, where he serves as the executive director. Professor Peng was also recently named a fellow with the Academy of International Business. He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UTD, Professor Peng was on the faculty at the Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii, where he taught students at all levels and often served as a faculty trainer and consultant. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy professorial appointments in Australia, Britain, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the United States. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business, and has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. Truly global in scope, his research focuses on firms' strategies in regions such as Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. He has published about 50 articles in leading academic journals and authored three books. Klaus Meyer is a Professor of Strategy and International Business at the School of Management, University of Bath, where he teaches Strategic Management and International Business. Previously, Klaus was a Professor in the Department of Management at the University of Reading, with association to the Center for International Business Research (CIBS). Before that, he spent eight years with the Center for East European Studies, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, where he eventually became a Professor of International Business Strategy. Klaus also held visiting positions at the Department of Management and Organization at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2001/02) and the Department of International Trade at National Cheng-chi University in Taiwan (spring 2005). Klaus' current research focuses on strategies of multinational enterprises in emerging economies and he is particularly interested in how firms adapt their business strategies to the specific conditions prevailing in each emerging economy. His research also extends to the impact of foreign investors on the economic transition and development of the host economies, for instance in the context of privatization related acquisitions. Another stream of research focuses on the global strategies that may bring multinational enterprises into emerging economies in the first place. Klaus also serves as a senior editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management.

An excellent textbook for international business (IB)

It is an excellent textbook for international business (IB). As a college instructor, I have used it in my class three semesters since 2008. Why do I like my students to benefit from this book?

1/ Knowledge: Students can understand the fundamental issues and concepts in IB, and apply knowledge to real world situations through the vivid cases. I appreciate that half of cases come from emerging markets, like BRICs. These help my students to know the importance of emerging markets, which are driving world economy out from financial crisis today.

2/ Analytical framework: While marketing textbooks focus on 4Ps, operations textbooks promote 7As, this book, which covers a vaster territory (the entire globe), only asks students to develop two frameworks: the institutional-based view and resource-based view. So this book not only helps student to absorb information, but also helps them to better organize and structure this messy information - how to use the framework to understand this rapidly changing world. My students love the debates!

4/ Humanism: Globalization raises lots of dilemmas. To deal with this complexity, students need to develop a better appreciation for human values and the ability to make judgments based on ethical and environmental considerations. This book also discusses lots of ethic challenge in business, and gives corporate social responsibility (CSR) a special chapter. No other IB textbook has done that to CSR.

In the end, I also like this book because it raises a fundamental question in IB: what determinates the success and failure of firms around the world? It is totally different from other textbooks in IB, which typically don't even have one big question. I believe that this core question will continue to stimulate our students--we cannot learn until the right question has been asked.

Seriously, how did you get this published?

I was forced to buy this as a text book for grad school.

Fortunately Amazon had it used for $3.99, rather than the $260 new. Even at $3.99 I feel as if I were robbed.

This book tries to have a friendly to read, and semi-snarky attitude toward international trade.

It really just waters down the topic to a juvenile degree, and plain sucks.

Writing Circles is Jim Vopat's latest book with Heinemann and the latest innovation in his career-long pursuit of powerful writing instruction and powerful collaboration for students and their teachers. At the core of Jim's work are his beliefs that every student is a writer, and that every teacher is a teacher of writing. To this end, he founded and codirects the Milwaukee Writing Project, serves as a faculty member of the Walloon Institute, and is Professor Emeritus of English at Carroll University. His previous books include the Heinemann title Micro Lessons in Writing as well as More than Bake Sales, The Parent Project, and What Makes Writing Good. Great Writing Workshop Resource
By "In the Middle" teacher
As a relatively new middle-school Language Arts teacher and a true believer in the reader/writing workshop approach posited by Nancie Atwell (with my own individualize tweaks, of course), I found Vopat's Micro Lessons in Writing to be a great resource. Perhaps other teachers have experienced the same dilemma I create in my own classroom--turning mini-lesson into maxi-lessons that results in coma-inducing lectures and reducing student-centered, purposeful writing time. Vopat "micro" lessons are what I needed as a foundation to truly "micronize" my lessons--five to ten minutes of purposeful instruction leading to meaningful writing and learning. I recognized many of the strategies Vopat incorporates in his micro-lessons from other published, renowned educators/authors, taking the best-of-the-best ideas and formatting them in a way to allow busy teachers an essential and quick tool for great lesson planning. I would love it if Vopat expanded his repertoires of micro-lessons!

All you'll ever need to know about petroleum biomarkers

These books (vols. 1 and 2) explore the use of petroleum biomarkers. The knowledge therein will be useful for those planning to work on crude oil exploration and oil spill research. It's advisable to have some knowledge on organic geochemistry. Both books are well updated and of easy reading, giving the reader a good insight into the topic. They're a must read for all researchers and students in this field.

Going to crawl in a hole and die somewhere.

Ah. There he goes again. I fall into the same trap everytime. I was swept up in the Templar universe and then kick-dropped off a cliff at the end.
again.

The Youngest Templar series remains to be one of the best series I've ever read (and I've read almost..300 books in the past year and a half)
If you haven't picked up the series yet, I urge you to do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

This novella didn't let me down! I seriously thought my kindle was frozen...until about a minute later I realized it was just the last page!

Great book but...

This ( like the other books in the series ) is outstanding. it takes place about where the third book left off. the book is captivating and keeps the same heroes we know with some new ones. the only problem i have with it is that is is very short. i read it in two days and I'm eagerly waiting for part two.
