184 pp, with about 60% of the book consisting of b&w illustrations (photos, plans, elevations, recreations, tables.)

The book advances the theory that "the Greeks employed a uniform system in arranging their buildings...man's viewpoint related the buildings not only to each other, but also to the landscape...." He rather boldly puts forward a theory stating that the "seemingly unordered layout of the buildings in ancient Greek sacred precincts" were strictly organized according to a master plan. And he uses numbers (ah, how the ancients loved numbers and proportions!) to demonstrate his points.

Significantly, Doxiadis examines not merely the prime architectural gems in the Greek city-states, but looks at over 25 different sites, scattered far and wide in the ancient Hellenic world.

I think it's a good book with effective exercises for all needs. Either you are a manager and you have to run meetings, or a trainer and want to use some of these methods during your seminars, the exercises shown in this book will result to be effective and interesting for partecipants. A good choice in my view, expecially considering that I have not found other books of exercises all focused on this issue only.

Either I am going to do this or struggle some more knowing I can choose to slowly transition to progress then excellence

Where do I start? I just finished reading this book starting from yesterday night until now which is the next day at 12:45PM. I did sleep. It is a short and powerful read. The instructions in this book are something I knew I needed and I realize will help me accomplish the leaps I want in my career and also life but the only catch is ...myself. I tend to procrastinate and this book has "no chill". It covers everything needed for the actor/actress and it does compliment classes and I know it will make lessons more effective..but am I willing to live this book from the moment I wake until I drift to sleep..and there is no drifting, this is constant practice even into my dreams. How serious am I? No doubt it will work and you should definitely hunker down, get your highlighter out and read this book. At the end it only leaves you asking yourself how bad do you really want it? Will you throw your own inhibitions to the wind and do this? What a blast. It needs some type of monk acting school lol

Polymer-modified or polymer cement mortar (PCM) and concrete (PCC) are materials which deal with concrete-polymer composites. They are made by partially replacing the cement hydrate binders of conventional cement mortar or concrete with polymers, i.e., polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers, and by strengthening the binders with the polymers. The polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers include latexes, emulsified polymers, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins, and monomers. The composite concrete and mortars are currently used as popular construction materials.

About the Author

Yoshihiko Ohama is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Architecture, in the College of Engineering, Nihon University, Koriyama, Japan. After graduating from Yamaguchi University, he received his doctorate from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, his main interest has been in the research and development of polymer- modified concrete and mortars. He has won awards for his research from the Society of Materials, Japan, and the Japan Society for Finishing Technology. He is also a recipient of a Russian Academy of Engineering honorary diploma. He is vice president, Intemational Congress of Polymers in Concrete, and is a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structure. An author, or co-author, of seven books, Professor Ohama is also on the editorial board of the International Journal of Cement Composites and Lightweight Concrete: Cement and Concrete Composites; Materials Engineering; and Construction and Building Materials.

A Man Worth Meeting

Did you know that the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was saved by a spider and a dove? This is just one of the details of his life that are brought to light in Sarah Conover’s lovely book, Muhammad: the story of a prophet and reformer. It’s a book that can be enjoyed by both children and adults, and one that is especially needed in post-9/11 America – an accessible introduction to the life of the founder of one of the three great monotheistic faiths.

In popular (mis)conception, Islam is a religion of violent extremists and its founder is, perhaps, the greatest terrorist of them all. This is not to say that there are not branches on the Muslim tree that are not violent and extreme, but the trunk and the roots are something else entirely. In his day Muhammad was known as a particularly just man, a peaceful man, a man of extraordinary trustworthiness. And Sarah Conover – who is a gifted storyteller – helps us to see the man behind the myths and more modern misrepresentations.

In the early 1990s the Venerable Tich Nhat Hanh wrote a biography of the Buddha – Old Path, White Cloud – in which he combines the gentle simplicity of a children’s story with a commitment to ensuring that every incident reported is grounded in the oldest and most venerated traditions. Ms. Conover has now done the same thing. She relates the events in Muhammad’s life – from the his early days as a Bedouin herder, to his first encounter with an angel in a cave, to his flight from Mecca to Yathrib (renamed Mecca) because of the backlash from those who were challenged by his teachings. At the end of the book Conover has placed notes on each of chapter to help the reader know what was her own invention and what is accepted within Islam. The spider and the dove, for instance, are well known and well beloved parts of the Prophet’s story. A scene in which Muhammad plays with his children comes from Conover’s imagination, yet it is in keeping with what the traditions say about him. And she promises that the only words she put into Muhammad’s mouth are words that traditions ascribe to him as well. (A panel of experts reviewed the manuscript to ensure the stories told are as accurate as possible according to accepted tradition.)

Recent years have given several reminders of how seriously the prohibition against visual representations of the Prophet is taken (at least in some branches of the Muslim family), yet Conover has painted a portrait with words in which we can see the devoted husband, loving father, and man of deep faith who responded to his understanding of the voice of the sacred and called for a reform of the religion of his day. Whatever your tradition, or lack thereof, this is a man worth meeting. I can think of no better introduction than Sarah Conover’s new book.

I am a very poor reader -- I could not put this book down. Well written and easy for me to read. Keep a pencil handy. You will want to make notes in the margins to keep everything straight in your head when you refer back. This book certainly opened my eyes to Muslim people and the Islamic faith. There is much of this book that can and should be a used as a measuring stick for the United states of America today.
