"As Stephen Colbert once put it, "A young adult novel is a regular novel that people actually read." I don't know if that's true, but I have come across one young adult novel that I think you actually will want toread - Brain Slaves by Richie Chevat.
"In some ways it's in the same mold as the best-selling Hunger Games orDivergent series, except Brain Slaves is extremely well written, the story is at once less bloody and more compelling and the characters and setting are more realistic. It's a slightly futuristic dystopian adventure with a teenage heroine, but the real themes of the book are class, inequality, education, access to knowledge, corporate influence and control of technology. Sounds like a lot, but it's a really good read."

A great read for adults as well as young readers

This is a fast-paced adventure story with plenty of creative twists and surprises. It unfolds in a vividly imagined future where educational technology has advanced beyond our wildest dreams, but the experience and results are eerily familiar. In addition to a thrilling story, Brain Slaves delivers some thought-provoking images of tracking and class in a world of austerity. The book is pitched to teenagers and young adults, but my scouting expedition for gifts turned into a fun ride when I discovered that it’s a great read for adults as well.

A fast-paced adventure

Chevat really knows how to keep a story moving, and it was hard to put this book down. It presents us with an all-too-plausible picture of a future where education has become a perfectly streamlined method of producing compliant workers. It's impossible not to root for the heroine and her friends as they enter the Net and battle to free the minds of a generation of kids, facing mortal peril and still finding time to fall in love along the way.
