Great Collection!

50 Fairy Stories. Compiled by Tig Thomas. Essex: Miles Kelly Publishing, 2009. 512 pp.
Tig Thomas has collected a wonderful selection of fairy stories to read to your child or simply enjoy for yourself. The thick volume is beautifully illustrated by six different artists. Their unique designs help to create an otherworldly experience for the reader/listener.
The collection is divided into six sections: Enchantments, Children and Fairies, Fairy Helpers, Magic and Mischief, Visitors to Fairyland, and I Wish, I Wish. Further, each story is listed with a 'reading time' of two to twenty minutes. The vast majority of them are somewhere in the five to fifteen minute zone, which is perfect for a quick bedtime read.
All of the stories are fun, and whimsical. I didn't notice any I wouldn't want to read to small children, but use your best judgement, and of course, read them once through before reading aloud to small kids.
My only criticism, and the one which makes me give this only four stars, is the lack of biographical material on the authors of each story. The illustrators each have a bio, but nothing for the authors. It shouldn't be too hard to put a line or two under each author's name noting when the story was first written, and where, and maybe a little about the author. As it is...nothing. Just the story's title and the name of the author. To me, this is a big disappointment. I would like to know if the story I'm reading is from the seventeenth century, or the twenty first.
My advice? If you like fairy stories, pick this one up.
